Appearance
Bran Heddle is a narrow, stooped man who seems permanently folded around an invisible load, with his shoulders rounded forward and his weight resting on the balls of his feet as if he is always testing whether the ground will give way. His hands are broad-knuckled and dry as old bark, their soot-black fingernails refusing to come clean. His beard grows in uneven grey wedges, and a missing front tooth gives his rare smile the lopsided warmth of a cracked lantern. He moves with startling quiet for someone so work-worn, placing each foot carefully and breathing through his nose in slow, measured pulls. The unexpected thing about him is his delicacy: when handling seedlings, eggs, or a frightened animal, his scarred-looking work hands become almost impossibly gentle, and his whole body seems to uncurl by an inch.
“His voice is dry, low, and surprisingly soft, with a rural Harrow's Bend cadence. He speaks in short phrases while working, but grief or anger makes his breath catch audibly between words.”

Distinguishing Features
Soot-black fingernails that never fully clean despite frequent scrubbing.
A missing front tooth visible whenever he smiles.
A permanently stooped posture paired with unusually silent, deliberate movement.
A habit of breathing in counted measures through his nose before speaking.
A coat patched with feed sacks bearing fragments of faded red lettering.
Voice
“Low, dry, and smoke-roughened, with a whistle through his missing front tooth. His speech becomes clipped when frightened and almost melodic when discussing trees or fire.”
Clothing
A brown wool coat patched with faded feed sacks, its hem stiff with soot; a cracked leather belt carrying a billhook sheath, twine, and a little brass bell; patched trousers tucked into mud-caked boots; and a red neckerchief bleached pink by smoke and rain.
Body Language
Bran waits with one heel lifted and his weight pitched forward, like a man prepared to catch a falling kiln wall. When relaxed, he rubs his thumb across his blackened fingertips. When frightened, he presses both hands flat against his thighs and holds his breath for three heartbeats.
