For a less punishing version, remove the damage from a failed attempt and make the counterweight stop for one round whenever the party sets the Still dial. For a more demanding version, have the counterweight resume moving at the end of each character's turn, requiring a character to spend an action each round to hold it in place while another pulls the lever.
Keep the solution grounded in the inscription and visible symbols. Do not require a specific character to succeed on a check; checks provide clarification, not access to essential information. Let players propose sensible substitutions for holding the counterweight or performing the gestures. On a failure, make the reset obvious and preserve another attempt.
