Beneath the inscription, three shallow sockets sit from left to right. A hand-shaped depression is carved in the center of the door.
The party can read the slate and lintel freely, rotate the three plates, and test settings in the basin. The lintel gives three directives in order from left socket to right: turn, offer, and witness; the slate identifies the matching glyphs as spiral, open hand, and closed eye. Align each plate, then press the hand-shaped depression in the door. Each correct alignment produces a clear tone and a steady blue glow; an incorrect one gives a low discordant note, so players can correct individual settings without risk. A wrong full sequence or premature press causes the ward pulse described under failure, then resets the plates. Characters can also use sensible tools, magic, or a sincere protective vow as alternate approaches; judge these by their fiction and the listed DCs rather than requiring one exact phrase.
The ward begins responding when anyone turns a glyph plate or touches the basin. It discharges only after a wrong complete sequence is confirmed or the door's hand-shaped depression is pressed prematurely.

The three notes resolve into a warm chord, the blue floor-light flows into the door seams, and the stone door withdraws into the wall. The basin becomes quiet and safe to handle.
The basin releases a harmlessly bright flash followed by a warding pulse: each creature touching the basin or door takes 1d6 force damage (basic DC 18 Reflex save). The plates reset, and the ward locks out new full attempts for one minute. The inscription and slate remain available, so the encounter continues.
The vault was built by Archivist-Magister Orel Venn after a civil war scattered records that could have prevented it. Venn designed the ward to admit custodians who understood its principle: knowledge is preserved by measured care, not by force. The glyphs encode the steps for opening the door, while the ward's limited sting discourages reckless handling without making a failed attempt fatal.
For a lower-powered group, reduce the ward pulse to 1d4 damage or make it impose only a brief dazzled effect. For a more capable group, raise check DCs by 2 and have the ward pulse also temporarily suppress one worn magic item until the next turn, while keeping the puzzle's clues explicit.
Treat the glyph key and inscription as reliable evidence, not riddles requiring a check to access. Checks provide confirmation or a single association, never a dead end. Accept a clear equivalent description of the glyphs and reward safe experimentation. The ward's consequence is brief, visible, and recoverable.
