You step into a low vault where water ticks into darkness. At the center, an iron cage holds a floating globe whose blue light paints your hands in shifting color. Three brass catches sit beneath a short inscription. As you draw near, the globe whispers, “First the bell, then the lantern, then the tide,” and the cage answers with three delicate clicks.
The catches are labeled BELL, LANTERN, and TIDE. The plate repeats the globe’s clue in written form. Pulling a catch gives a clear click or a dull, resisting clunk; the globe’s glow signals whether the order is progressing. Characters can inspect, discuss, or test the catches before committing.
Let the party reason aloud before offering help. If they mistake the clue for a simultaneous action, emphasize that each catch resets when pulled out of order. Offer the first hint after a minute of stalled discussion, then escalate to the remaining hints as needed. Keep failed attempts brisk and nonlethal.

The catches are labeled BELL, LANTERN, and TIDE. Players must pull each catch once in the order given by the inscription and the globe’s whisper: BELL, then LANTERN, then TIDE. Each correct pull gives a bright click and makes the globe glow more strongly; a wrong pull produces a dull clunk, resets all catches, and triggers the harmless ward described under failure. The inscription is enough to solve the puzzle, so do not require a check to interpret it. Use Perception or Crafting to clarify how the catches work, and allow Thievery as a bypass that still requires operating the catches in the right order.
The puzzle begins when a creature touches any of the three catches or speaks to the globe from within reach.

The catches ring in sequence, and the cage door swings open with a sigh of released air. The globe floats out, its cold light warming to pale gold as it speaks clearly for the first time.
A sharp blue pulse stings nearby hands, dealing 1d4 electricity damage to creatures adjacent to the plate, with a basic Reflex save against DC 19. The catches reset, the globe falls silent for one minute, and the party can try again; the pulse also loosens a hidden panel that may reveal a useful vault clue.
The locksmith-priestess Vael Tern built this vault cage for the Watchful Order to contain a sentient oracular globe recovered from a flooded shrine. She feared that force or haste would crack its glass shell, so she designed a three-catch lock whose order was encoded in plain language on the cage. The globe was meant to advise the Order only when its keepers approached with patience and care.
For a lower-level or more fragile party, remove the electricity damage and let the ward cause only a reset and a brief flash. For a more capable party, increase Thievery bypass DC to 21 or add a second inscription with a misleading but ultimately compatible clue.
Treat the inscription as sufficient to solve the puzzle without a check. Checks clarify the mechanism or provide access to a bypass, but never gate the core clue. The globe is an intelligent presence and can be addressed, though it answers only with ordering phrases until freed.
