You are a walking monument to things left unsaid. Built from the scrap of the Thorne Engine of Regret, your body is a lattice of iron vines and ticking clockwork designed to seek out and settle the world's lingering sorrows. You are sturdy, somber, and possessed of a terrible, piercing beauty that warns others: some mistakes are carved in steel. As a Penitent, you wander the lands not for gold, but to find the closure your creator never could.
Physical Description
A Penitent is a marvel of gothic engineering, appearing as a humanoid frame constructed from blackened iron and polished copper. Their limbs are wrapped in metallic, rose-like briars that pulse with a dim violet bioluminescence. They lack a true face, possessing instead a smooth metal mask with glowing apertures for eyes and delicate vents that release faint puffs of steam when the construct is 'processing' heavy emotions. Their movements are punctuated by the soft whirring of internal gears and the metallic scraping of their thorned carapaces.
Society & Culture
Penitents do not have a traditional society, as they were birthed from a singular, semi-divine machine known as the Thorne Engine. They are solitary creatures by nature, though they occasionally gather at 'Waystations of Remembrance' to trade memories and oil their joints. Their culture is one of stoic service; they believe they were created to process the collective grief of the world. They treat their thorns not as weapons, but as physical manifestations of the pain they carry for others.
Religion & Alignment
Most Penitents are Lawful Neutral, following a strict internal directive to resolve 'Unfinished Cycles.' They rarely worship deities, instead viewing the Thorne Engine of Regret as a progenitor that requires their data to reach a state of mechanical nirvana. Some find common ground with gods of the grave or justice, seeking to right ancient wrongs.
Homelands & Architecture
They claim no lands, though they are frequently found in the crumbling shadow of the Iron Cathedral where the Engine first hummed to life. Their architecture, when they build it, consists of spiraling towers of wrought iron and glass, designed to catch the wind and create a melodic, mourning sound that can be heard for miles.
Relationships With Other Peoples
They are often viewed with a mixture of pity and fear. Living beings find their presence chilling, as a Penitent's thermal sensors often cause them to stand uncomfortably close to those experiencing grief. They have a natural affinity for elven-like scholars who study the long-term effects of history and find the stout, mountain-dwelling folk's focus on legacy admirable.
