WarningNever cast a spell merely because the components are present. That is how laboratories become craters.
FormulaThe third circle is not a wall. It is a question asked of reality, and reality resents being questioned.
DiaryI dreamed of a staircase descending through the stars. The final step bore my name.
DiagramDiagram: three nested triangles, each marked with a different angle of refraction. Do not complete the outermost line.
The book itself
The book smells faintly of rain on hot stone and extinguished candles.
Its diagrams appear incomplete until the reader has personally witnessed the phenomenon they describe.
Every spell is surrounded by annotations comparing practical results with elegant theory.
The margins glitter briefly whenever a reader makes a genuinely original observation.
The caster
Academic wizardryElian Vey
Studies: Generalist arcana with a focus on magical analysis, force effects, and controlled teleportation.Manner: Precise, courteous, and easily distracted by elegant magical phenomena. Elian speaks as though every conversation were a lecture he is trying not to give.Focus: A crystal prism mounted in a brass folding frame, used to split ambient light into the colors of magical energy.Quirk: He counts silently whenever someone casts a spell nearby, then records the number in the nearest available margin.Wants: To locate the legendary Null Meridian, a point where the boundaries between schools of magic briefly overlap, and prove that arcane power follows a deeper grammar.Elian Vey studied at a prestigious academy until his experiments revealed that several revered magical axioms were deliberately falsified. He fled with this folio and has spent years testing which parts of established arcana can safely be challenged.
The book
A narrow, iron-cornered folio bound in midnight-blue leather, its cover etched with concentric sigils that shift when viewed from different angles. Thin silver chains clasp the book shut, and its pages are made from pale vellum flecked with tiny points of light. Ink diagrams rearrange themselves when a spell is understood.

Plot hooks
1The folio's unfinished equation matches symbols found on a sealed observatory beneath the city, and completing it may open a portal to an unknown plane.
2A rival archmage has stolen three pages and is using them to identify the location of a lost spell laboratory protected by autonomous magical defenses.
3The book refuses to reveal its final marginal note until its owner chooses whether to destroy or preserve a dangerous arcane experiment.
4Several pages have begun rewriting themselves in the handwriting of a dead wizard who claims that the folio was never meant to belong to its current owner.
