  • DiaryDaisy: a perfectly ordinary otter, has answered my Summon Animal spell ever since my attempt. She is not an illusion, and in spite of whatever happens during her time with me, she always returns home unharmed.
  • WarningA summoned creature is a temporary guest, not a possession. Sustain the spell to keep the passage open; never promise a visitor more than you can deliver.
  • FormulaPotion recipes are copied here as formulas for study. To Craft them, I still need the appropriate formula, tools, materials, time, and any required feat.
  • DiagramTen names are inked in the last leaves. Beside each: what it is, where it was met, and how it prefers to be welcomed.

The book itself

The ten names in the back are visitors Strago has met, not a list of creatures he can summon on demand.
Daisy, a perfectly ordinary otter, has answered Strago's Summon Animal spell ever since his first attempt. She is no illusion and always returns home unharmed.
The recipe folio contains potion formulas and magical item crafting notes; it grants no automatic Crafting feat or special crafting ability.

The caster

  • Arcane wizardStrago Mistveil
Studies: ConjurationManner: Patient and courteous, even under pressure; he treats summoned creatures as guests and asks before giving them orders.Focus: A brass key worn on a cord, used to trace doorway-shaped sigils in the air.Quirk: He introduces himself to every new creature he summons and writes down how it prefers to be addressed.Wants: To discover why some summoned visitors seem to recognize the book, while ensuring every being he calls can return safely.Strago Mistveil was an itinerant scholar who mapped old thresholds and studied the safe summoning of creatures. He began the book after a spell unexpectedly brought Daisy the otter to his camp.

The book

A compact, midnight-blue codex bound in stitched leather, with a brass clasp shaped like a closed gate. Its pages are ruled with fine silver lines that rearrange into threshold diagrams when opened. A pocket inside the back cover holds potion recipes, item-making notes, and a carefully copied list of ten summoned visitors.

Plot hooks

1One of the ten visitors has not returned home after its spell ended. The trail leads to a damaged threshold and a place that should not have been reachable.
2A stranger offers to buy the book's list of names, claiming one belongs to a missing relative. Strago suspects the list could also be used to find or exploit the visitors.
3The brass clasp has begun opening by itself at night, and something on the other side is politely asking to be invited in.
