The Lantern Stag
The Lantern Stag began as a forester's rest shed beside two old wagon trails. When the trade-town grew around the intersection, Maela Thorncup's grandparents rebuilt it in dark cedar and placed the carved stag sign above the market-road entrance. Over the years, the tavern became the block's unofficial message board, counting house, hiring hall, and emergency shelter. Maela inherited it after years of working every position in the building, from scullery hand to host, and turned its busy traffic into a quiet network of information. The tavern has survived fires, floods, a winter famine, and one brief attempt by the outfitter to buy the entire block. Maela still keeps the original stag antler mounted above the hearth, though she insists it came from an ordinary deer.
