The Fleabane and Rose
The Fleabane and Rose began as two rival businesses sharing a narrow medieval townhouse. The Fleabane was a bathhouse favored by caravan guards, while the Rose was a licensed performance hall patronized by merchants and minor nobles. Their owners hated one another, but mounting taxes forced a merger. The resulting charter listed the premises as an inn, bathhouse, theatrical society, gaming house, and lodging establishment. Companionship was never named as a service. Instead, guests contract separately with performers and attendants, a legal fiction that has survived three magistrates and several scandalous investigations.
