The inn keeps one empty chair beside the hearth for absent friends, missing travelers, and those who have not yet found their way home. No guest may move it. The wall clock loses exactly one minute whenever someone tells a lie in the common room, and the house cat, Bramble, hisses at anyone carrying a royal seal. The innkeeper also asks every new arrival to name one thing they hope to find and one thing they fear losing.
