Mara keeps every regular’s preferred cup marked with a tiny notch, and she can identify a patron by the sound of their mug touching the bar. The front door sticks whenever the tide is falling. After the fire, the surviving stone remains warm beneath the ashes, and a faint grinding sound begins whenever Sablewing is near.

Saltmere sailors say the Millstone Inn is safest when the wind screams, because the building’s old foundation stones were laid by people who understood tides better than priests understand sin. The inn’s bell rope is tied to a brass clapper salvaged from a wrecked chapel, and Mara rings it whenever a storm, shipwreck, or raid threatens the quay. Old patrons insist the millstone beneath the floor shifts by a finger’s width before unnatural weather arrives. The Blackfin Knives’ raids have made that superstition feel less like tavern talk and more like a warning.
