Perchance Alternatives: 6 Random Generator Tools I Use for D&D in 2026

Perchance is a community-driven generator platform with thousands of user-created generators across every topic. Some are great. Most are abandoned. None are built for D&D specifically. For DMs who want a generator workflow that fits a real campaign, here are the six tools I tested in March and April 2026.

How the 6 tools compare.

Same campaign, same prompts, same target output, with the tradeoffs that actually showed up in my run.

WINNER

CharGen

Purpose-built D&D AI generators with linked entities, portraits, and a free tier.

What I use weekly. CharGen does what Perchance's best D&D generators try to do, with three additions: AI-driven cohesion across rolls, integrated visual content (portraits, tokens, 3D model files), and entity linkage so an NPC ties to a settlement, faction, and region. Free tier covers casual prep. The trade against Perchance is the community library size. Perchance has thousands of niche generators across every topic. CharGen focuses purely on TTRPG.

What it does well

  • Purpose-built for D&D, every generator fits a real prep job
  • AI-driven cohesion across NPCs, settlements, factions, regions
  • Visual content (portraits, tokens, 3D files) baked in
  • Free tier covers casual prep, no card required

What it doesn't

  • Smaller library than Perchance's thousands of generators
  • TTRPG-only focus, not for non-D&D random generation
Best for

DMs who want generators that fit D&D prep with cohesion and visuals.

Donjon

Free table-driven D&D generators, the original DM workflow.

Donjon predates Perchance and remains the most reliable free D&D generator suite. Tables for NPCs, dungeons, treasure, names, settlements, more. Output is plain text. The trade against Perchance is library breadth (Donjon is D&D-focused, Perchance covers every topic). The trade against AI tools is no cohesion across rolls and no visuals. For pure free table-driven D&D rolls, Donjon remains the cleanest choice.

Best for

DMs who want fast free D&D random rolls without AI variability.

Chartopia

Community random tables platform with strong D&D coverage.

Chartopia is the closest direct competitor to Perchance for community random tables. The interface is cleaner, the D&D coverage is stronger out of the gate, and you can roll on tables, save favourites, and create your own. The trade against Perchance is library breadth (Chartopia leans D&D, Perchance covers every topic). The trade against AI tools is no cohesion and no visuals.

Best for

DMs who like Perchance's table approach but want stronger D&D focus and cleaner UI.

Kassoon

Free D&D generators with stronger town integration than Perchance.

Kassoon takes a different approach from Perchance's table model. Instead of thousands of small tables, Kassoon offers fewer generators with deeper integration. Town generation links NPCs, shops, and rumours together. Combat encounter builder accepts party level and difficulty. Free with no signup. For DMs who want some integration without going to AI, Kassoon is the cleanest middle ground.

Best for

DMs who want some content cohesion without AI, free with no signup.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

General AI as a flexible prompt-driven generator.

ChatGPT is the flexible alternative to Perchance's table model. Instead of rolling on a pre-built table, you describe what you want and the model generates it. Output is more cohesive than table rolls, more flexible than fixed templates. The trade is no D&D-specific tooling, no entity linkage, no save-as-record. For DMs who want Perchance-style generation with AI flexibility, ChatGPT is the simplest entry, especially for those already paying for Plus.

Best for

DMs who want flexible AI generation without D&D-specific structure.

Random.org

True hardware-based randomness for table rolls and dice.

Random.org sits in a different category from Perchance entirely. It is not a generator platform, it is a hardware random number source for true randomness. For DMs who run print supplements or homebrew tables and want a reliable RNG to roll on them, Random.org is the trusted option. Useful as a companion to printed table books, less useful as a Perchance replacement for content generation.

Best for

DMs running print table books who want true RNG for rolls.

Switching from Perchance

How to switch in ten minutes.

If you have been using Perchance for D&D random generation, the switch to CharGen takes about ten minutes. Open the NPC Generator and ask for a name plus role plus visual hook, the same shape as a Perchance table roll. CharGen returns a portrait, stat hook, and saved entity record. Your existing Perchance bookmarks still have value for non-D&D random generation (writing prompts, fantasy names, etc). You do not need to abandon Perchance, you stop reaching for it as the default for D&D-specific work.

FAQ

Common DM questions about this lineup.

Q01

What is the best Perchance alternative for D&D in 2026?

CharGen is the best Perchance alternative for D&D specifically. AI-driven generation with cohesion across rolls, visual content baked in, free tier with no card. For free table-driven workflow without AI, Donjon or Chartopia are the cleanest swaps with stronger D&D focus than Perchance.

Q02

Is Perchance still useful for D&D after these alternatives?

Yes for niche tables that nobody else has built. Perchance's strength is the long tail of community generators, including obscure ones like Cthulhu cult names or steampunk airship layouts. For mainstream D&D categories (NPCs, dungeons, treasure), the alternatives in this lineup do the job better. Most DMs use Perchance for the niche rolls and one of the alternatives as the daily driver.

Q03

Which alternative produces the best NPCs?

CharGen produces the most usable NPCs, with portraits, stat hooks, and links to settlement and faction records. ChatGPT produces strong long-form NPC writing. Kassoon and Donjon produce reliable free NPCs without AI variability. Chartopia depends on which community table you roll on. Random.org is not a generator at all.

Q04

Can I create my own custom generators?

Chartopia lets you build custom random tables and share them with the community. Perchance is built around custom generator creation with its own scripting language. ChatGPT lets you save custom prompts (essentially custom generators). CharGen does not currently support user-created generators, the library is curated.

Q05

Which is best for someone running multiple TTRPG systems, not just D&D?

Perchance and Chartopia have the broadest community libraries across multiple TTRPG systems. ChatGPT is system-agnostic and adapts to whatever rules you describe. CharGen is currently D&D-focused, less suitable if you run Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, or other systems as the primary game.

Q06

Are these tools safe for commercial or published TTRPG content?

Each platform has its own terms. Perchance, Chartopia, Donjon, and Kassoon generally allow commercial use of content you generate, though community-created generators may have their own licenses. ChatGPT and CharGen require you to read current AI content terms before publishing. Random.org outputs are uncopyrightable random numbers. Always check current terms before commercial use.
