The Ossuary of Saint Valerius
A monolithic structure of grey marble and black iron, the Ossuary stands as a grim reminder of a fallen faith. Once a beacon of light, its towering spires are now jagged stumps clawing at the sky. A thick, unnatural fog clings to the foundation, smelling of wet earth and old copper. The central nave is wide enough to house a small army, but it is currently occupied only by rows of shattered pews and the restless dead.

The Ossuary of Saint Valerius
The air is unnaturally cold, enough to see one's breath even in mid-summer. There is a persistent, low-frequency hum that vibrates in the teeth of visitors, and shadows appear to move independently of light sources.

History
Sacred and Corrupted Relics
The High Altar houses the Rib of Valerius, which functions as a mace of disruption but requires the wielder to succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or be possessed by the Saint's zealotry. Nearby, the Chalice of Tears can purify any liquid, but it turns the drinker's eyes permanently pitch black.
Haunting Manifestations
At level 11, adventurers will face 'Spectral Displacement' traps. When triggered, a character is blinked into the Ethereal Plane for 1d4 rounds, where they must fight a CR 7 Invisible Stalker representing the temple's lingering spite. Additionally, the 'Chorus of the Damned' forces a DC 17 Constitution save or inflicts 4d10 psychic damage and the deafened condition.
Defiled Divine Services
Though no longer a place of holy worship, the Abbot performs the 'Vespers of the Void' at midnight. This ritual summons 2d4 Wraiths that patrol the perimeter for six hours. If interrupted, the Abbot uses the 'Animate Objects' spell on the cathedral's heavy iron pews to crush intruders.
Denizens
Obsessive, melancholic, and prone to speaking in rhythmic liturgical chants.
A spirit with sewn-shut lips who communicates through vivid, bloody illusions to warn the party of traps.
An undead warrior who maintains the grounds, obsessively polishing the bones of the dead with a silk cloth.
Rumors & Plot Hooks
- 1.The cathedral's bell has no clapper, yet it tolls every time a king dies.
- 2.Those who spend more than an hour inside begin to forget the faces of their loved ones.
- 3.There is a vault beneath the altar containing a weapon capable of slaying a shadow dragon.
Classified Entry
The entire building is a dormant Gargantuan Mimic that feeds specifically on the psychic resonance of grieving souls, kept in a state of stasis by the Abbot's constant prayers.
