The Hollow Meridian
The Hollow Meridian is the Ashen Meridian's principal sanctuary beneath the salt flats of the Sunken Sun, a colossal fortress built around an ancient geothermal shaft. Its seven concentric ring-tiers combine cult headquarters, relic workshop, archive, prison, command center, and deep-earth redoubt. The complex spans roughly twenty acres underground, with hidden entrances scattered beneath abandoned survey stations, collapsed caravan wells, and salt-crusted sinkholes. Vertical lifts, spiral stairs, chain bridges, and maintenance shafts connect the rings, descending thousands of feet toward active geothermal zones and sealed pre-Sultanate ruins. At party level 11, the Hollow Meridian is suited to a dangerous infiltration in which the characters must navigate factional disputes, rescue valuable captives, survive unstable relic tests, and decide whether the artifacts below should be destroyed, claimed, or revealed to the Sultanate.

The Hollow Meridian
Warm, dry air presses through every corridor, carrying the smell of mineral dust, lamp oil, hot metal, and bitter medicinal herbs. The floor stones retain a faint heat beneath travelers' boots, while distant vents hiss behind the walls and make conversation feel briefly private. Red and amber lamps throw moving bands of light across carved rings and iron catwalks. Workers speak in low voices, scribes scratch across waxed tablets, and somewhere below, the Blackwell gives a slow subterranean thud that trembles through the teeth. The sanctuary is orderly and clean, but its calm has the tightness of a clenched hand.

Measured, patient, and fiercely protective. Mara listens longer than most people expect, remembers every name spoken in her halls, and rarely raises her voice. Beneath her restraint lies a willingness to sacrifice allies, captives, or the sanctuary itself if she believes the Sunken Sun's buried truth can finally be brought into the open.
History
Ring-Tier Layout
The Hollow Meridian is arranged in seven concentric ring-tiers around the Blackwell, a geothermal shaft that drops through saltstone, buried ruins, and volcanic caverns. The outer ring contains concealed entrances, supply vaults, sleeping quarters, and workshops for ordinary members. The second ring holds the public face of the sanctuary, including the Ash Court, a meeting hall where senior agents settle disputes through ritual testimony and controlled demonstrations of relics. The third and fourth rings contain laboratories, archive galleries, and armories. The fifth ring is reserved for prisoners and political hostages. The sixth ring houses the Meridian Council and its private chambers. The lowest ring surrounds the Blackwell access lifts and the sealed pre-Sultanate machinery below.
Maintenance and Daily Operations
The stronghold is maintained by a disciplined corps of relicwrights, stonecutters, cooks, healers, and geothermal engineers. Walls are scrubbed of ash each morning, drainage channels are cleared before every shift change, and every relic workshop keeps a written inventory. The Meridian considers disorder a form of weakness. Even prisoners receive regular meals, clean water, medical examinations, and fresh clothing, though each kindness is measured against the value of the information they may possess. Brass heat gauges, red-glass lamps, and slate direction markers make the complex remarkably navigable for a dungeon of its size.
Relic Workshops and Archives
The relic workshops produce devices intended to expose the Sultanate's buried crimes or force its rulers to acknowledge them. Some creations are practical, such as heat-resistant drilling tools, listening tubes, coded seal presses, and dust-proof lenses. Others are dangerous pre-Sultanate mechanisms repaired with modern craft. The most restricted work concerns ash relics, artifacts that absorb memory, emotion, or elemental force before releasing it in a concentrated surge. Every major project requires three signatures: one from a relicwright, one from an Ashen Meridian witness, and one from the Council's keeper of consequences.
Captive Security
The Hollow Meridian does not have a single prison block. Captives are distributed according to risk and usefulness. The Quiet Cells hold spies and exhausted adventurers beneath constant magical silence. The Witness Rooms hold nobles, officials, and former allies who are questioned in the presence of scribes. The Deep Cells are built into the shaft wall, where heat, pressure, and distant subterranean thunder wear down even powerful prisoners. A hidden fourth category, the Mercy Vault, shelters captives whom the Meridian hopes to convert rather than break.
Defensive Measures
Approach through the outer rings is controlled by layered permissions rather than a single gate. Members carry clay tokens marked with their assigned ring, while senior officers use heat-reactive seals. The sanctuary employs locked stone shutters, false corridors, collapsing stair sections, alarm chimes tuned to different intruders, and guardians made from slag, saltstone, and bound elemental residue. The greatest danger is the Blackwell itself. Sudden heat pulses can ignite loose dust, rupture old pipes, or awaken machinery beneath the fortress. During an alarm, the rings can be sealed independently, trapping invaders in a chosen tier while Meridian forces converge from concealed maintenance passages.
Denizens
Measured, patient, and fiercely protective. Mara listens longer than most people expect, remembers every name spoken in her halls, and rarely raises her voice. Beneath her restraint lies a willingness to sacrifice allies, captives, or the sanctuary itself if she believes the Sunken Sun's buried truth can finally be brought into the open.
A former Verulanan excavation magistrate who turned against the Sultanate after witnessing the Emberwake disaster. She speaks gently, dresses plainly, and treats the sanctuary as a hospital for a wounded nation. Her compassion is genuine, but she has authorized brutal actions whenever she believes they will prevent a greater atrocity.
A brilliant relicwright with scarred hands and a habit of testing unfinished devices on himself. Tarek believes ancient machines contain evidence that can overturn Sultanate history. He is generous with apprentices, contemptuous of caution, and secretly assembling a device capable of draining heat from the Blackwell.
A former Sultanate intelligence officer captured during a Meridian raid and later converted to the cause. She supervises the Quiet Cells and knows the names of informants in several fortified caravan routes. Her loyalty is sincere, but she still reports selected information to an unknown contact beyond the salt flats.
An elderly archivist who remembers the first generation of the Ashen Meridian and distrusts its younger radicals. He can identify forged excavation records, decode pre-Sultanate measurement marks, and recite the names of workers killed by noble surveyors. He wants the archive opened to the public, even if doing so destroys the organization.
A silent Basalt-Born engineer who maintains the lifts, vents, and ring shutters. Sava communicates through chalk marks, gestures, and precise diagrams. She has found evidence that the fortress's foundations are shifting toward a buried chamber and suspects the Blackwell is not a shaft at all, but the upper throat of a dormant construct.
A charismatic young speaker who has gathered followers among the sanctuary's most militant members. He believes negotiation has failed and intends to detonate a corrupted relic beneath a major Sultanate route. His public arguments are persuasive, while his private plans show little concern for civilian deaths.
Rumors & Plot Hooks
- 1.A sealed archive beneath the fourth ring contains proof that Sultanate founders knew the Sunken Sun was built over an active pre-Sultanate engine.
- 2.The deepest prisoners are not captives at all, but former Meridian leaders who tried to destroy the Blackwell.
- 3.A relic in the Ashworks can remove a specific memory from every creature within a mile, though no one agrees who commissioned it.
- 4.The sanctuary's maintenance tunnels connect to the Tomb of the Ash Lord when Poreseta is full.
- 5.The Hollow Meridian has survived three attempted assaults because its original builders left behind a second defensive ring far below the known fortress.
- 6.Mara Venn plans to surrender the sanctuary to the Sultanate in exchange for the release of hundreds of workers held in labor camps.
- 7.Someone has been altering the Ring Bell signals, creating false emergencies to move prisoners and relics through restricted corridors.
- 8.The Blackwell has begun answering questions spoken into its vents, but each answer arrives in the voice of a dead excavator.
Classified Entry
The Hollow Meridian's geothermal shaft is the exposed upper section of an ancient pressure engine called the Hearth Below. The machine was designed to regulate the Sunken Sun's buried vents and prevent catastrophic eruptions, but its control core was deliberately removed during the disasters that created the basin. The missing core now forms the heart of a pre-Sultanate relic hidden beneath the Tomb of the Ash Lord. The Ashen Meridian's radical faction has discovered this connection and believes the core can be used to force the Sultanate into submission by redirecting geothermal pressure beneath its fortified routes. In truth, activating the Hearth Below without restoring its full control system will cause a chain of eruptions across the basin. Mara Venn knows only part of the danger. The oldest archive keeper, Oren Pell, has concealed the final warning because he believes the characters may be the first outsiders capable of destroying the machine safely. Meanwhile, Jalen Marr has already taken a damaged control fragment into the Deep Lift and is descending toward the engine as the fortress begins to shake.
