Stillwing Ward
Stillwing Ward is a small recovery lodge built into the Skyreach Cliffs above Gale-Hallow Sanctuary. Its name began as a warning, because injured fliers who ignored the ward's bells often tried to leave too soon and fell from the landing shelves. Over generations, the warning shortened in common speech until Stillwing became the building's accepted name. The ward treats storm survivors, aerial couriers, glider pilots, guards, and travelers injured by the violent updrafts around Zenith Wing. Gentle geothermal heat warms the floors, while curtained beds, herbal steam baths, and disciplined triage give the place the quiet efficiency of a veteran military hospital.

Stillwing Ward
Warm mineral air meets the sharp scent of boiled herbs, clean wool, and faintly singed leather. Steam beads on the stone walls, while wind rasps around the shutters and distant wings beat across the landing shelves. The ward feels calm without being soft, a place where pain is measured, bandaged, and sent walking back into the storm.

Exacting, patient, and quietly fierce. Sheshti has little tolerance for vanity, wasted supplies, or patients who mistake pain tolerance for recovery. Beneath her stern manner, she keeps careful track of every former patient and sends discreet messages when she suspects someone has returned to dangerous work too soon.
History
Triage and Recovery
The ward receives patients through a narrow basalt entry cut into the cliff. A copper bell hangs beside the door, and every arrival rings it once before crossing the threshold. The first chamber is a triage room with three heated tables, curtained alcoves, splint racks, and a wall of labeled drawers. Patients with burns, broken wings, pressure injuries, or storm shock are sorted by urgency rather than rank. Foreign visitors receive the same care as Aethelgard's citizens, though the ward records their names and escort affiliations with exacting care.
Healing Facilities
Beneath the ward runs a network of gentle geothermal channels, covered by removable basalt floor plates. Healers use these warmed passages to regulate fever, dry soaked clothing, and prepare mineral poultices. The recovery lodge contains six curtained beds, two private rooms for dignitaries or contagious patients, and a steam chamber scented with crushed mountain herbs. Patients are expected to walk the inner circuit before discharge, strengthening balance while listening for changes in the wind through the cliff vents.
Emergency Stores
The ward keeps emergency supplies for pilots and cliff travelers: folded glider cloth, climbing lines, bone splints, salves for cinder burns, pressure wraps, antitoxins, and small vials of restorative draught. One locked cabinet holds three greater healing potions reserved for guardians of the Skyreach Cliffs or mass-casualty events. The cabinet key hangs from the neck of the senior healer, while the inventory is checked aloud at dawn and dusk.
Death and Remembrance
A patient who dies in the ward is not carried immediately to the memorial chambers. Instead, the body remains beneath a white wool covering until a remembrance priest arrives from Gale-Hallow Sanctuary. The staff believe hurried funerals invite the cliff winds to carry away unfinished words. Visitors may sit beside the dead until the third bell, when the ward opens its eastern shutters and lets the last breath meet the high air.

A broad-shouldered dragonborn healer with scarred hands and a habit of counting every breath before beginning treatment. She learned medicine from shrine keepers and battlefield surgeons, and she refuses to let rank alter triage priority. Her name is a worn local form of an older word meaning “one who closes the wound.”
A human gliderwright with a plain, weathered manner and a permanent limp from the Stillwing Fall. He repairs braces, wing frames, harnesses, and walking aids, often testing his work on himself before giving it to a patient. His surname comes from the cliffside trade quarter where his family once made rope.
A half-dragon remembrance priest who visits the ward at dawn and after every fatality. Her flowing name preserves a corrupted form of an old funerary phrase no living priest fully understands. She speaks gently to the dying but becomes severe when anyone treats the dead as cargo.
A young kobold orderly from Gale-Hallow who knows every stair, vent, and hidden maintenance crawlway in the building. His byname is a warning inherited from an ancestor who vanished while chasing a loose patient toward the cliff edge. He is cheerful during ordinary work and suddenly silent whenever the wind changes direction.
Rumors & Plot Hooks
- 1.A patient who recovered from a lightning strike claims the geothermal channels whisper names during the Great Gale.
- 2.Someone has been replacing small amounts of restorative draught with clear water, but only in bottles assigned to foreign visitors.
- 3.A sealed crawlway beneath the steam chamber leads toward an older shrine cut into the mountain before Gale-Hallow Sanctuary was built.
- 4.The ward's eastern shutters sometimes open by themselves moments before a glider crashes, as though the building senses danger.
- 5.A wounded courier spent three nights repeating the same phrase in an unknown tongue, then disappeared before discharge.
- 6.The senior healer once treated a disguised dragon from the Obsidian Spire, and the creature left behind a scale that still grows warm near corrupted leyline activity.
Classified Entry
The oldest geothermal channel beneath the ward is not natural. It is part of a buried pressure conduit connected to the failing leyline network beneath the Skyreach Cliffs. The conduit has begun pulsing irregularly, and each pulse briefly alters the patients' dreams. Sheshti knows something is wrong but believes the ward's foundations are shielding Gale-Hallow Sanctuary from a more dangerous rupture below. If the conduit is damaged, the ward will become a refuge from escaping heat and ash, but its floors may split open toward the buried system.
