Oath of Babel

Paladins of the Oath of Babel believe that every voice contains a fragment of truth. They stand between cultures, armies, and hostile powers, using sacred language to establish understanding—or impose silence when understanding fails. Their divine speech can steady allies, unravel confusion, and turn an enemy’s own words against them. On the battlefield, an Oath of Babel paladin is a radiant mediator who controls the flow of communication and protects companions from mental and linguistic manipulation.

You gain Oath Spells at the Paladin levels specified by the Paladin class. These spells are always prepared and count as Paladin spells for you. Your subclass powers primarily manipulate communication, mental influence, fear, charm, and supernatural commands.

Beacon of Hope Strengthens allies through shared conviction and renewed purpose.
Tongues Grants perfect mutual understanding across language barriers.
Sending Carries a message across great distances when diplomacy cannot wait.

4th-Level Spells

Compulsion Directs movement through forceful supernatural language.
Confusion Disrupts hostile coordination by scrambling perception and meaning.
Freedom of Movement Protects an ally from magical restraints and controlling effects.

5th-Level Spells

Dispel Evil and Good Breaks hostile supernatural influence and banishes unnatural control.
Geas Places a long-term command on a creature through an oath-like magical injunction.
Rary's Telepathic Bond Creates a private mental channel for perfect party coordination.

Multiclassing

This subclass follows the Paladin multiclassing rules. A character must meet the Paladin multiclassing prerequisite of Strength 13 and Charisma 13 to multiclass into or out of Paladin. Oath of Babel features rely primarily on Charisma and Channel Divinity.

Proficiencies

No additional weapon, armor, tool, or saving throw proficiencies. Oath of Babel paladins commonly train in Insight, Persuasion, Religion, and one or more languages, but these are roleplaying choices unless granted by another feature.

Training & Initiation

A candidate must spend time among people who do not share a language, learning to resolve conflict without relying on familiar words. Initiation usually involves a public vow spoken in several languages, followed by a trial in which the candidate must protect opposing sides while preserving the truth of their testimony. The final rite teaches the initiate a sacred phrase whose meaning changes according to the listener’s deepest need.

Societal Perception

Ordinary people often welcome these paladins as mediators, interpreters, and protectors from magical coercion. Rulers may distrust them because an Oath of Babel paladin can expose mistranslations, challenge propaganda, and make secret commands difficult to enforce. In regions with persecuted languages, they are revered as guardians of cultural survival.
