Kalaka

The Kalaka are desert-born human barbarians who believe survival belongs to those willing to pay for it in blood. Their warriors study fear as carefully as weaponcraft, marking their bodies with ritual scars and their enemies with wounds that announce doom. To a Kalaka, mercy is not kindness but a crime against the tribe: an enemy spared today may become the blade at your family’s throat tomorrow. In battle, Kalaka warriors turn pain into momentum, terrorize isolated foes, and refuse to fall while their vengeance remains unfinished. Their mechanical niche is an aggressive martial predator who gains escalating power from wounded enemies, spreads fear through decisive attacks, and converts dangerous positioning into brutal survivability.

Multiclassing

No special multiclassing requirements beyond the Barbarian's normal multiclassing rules. A Strength-focused martial character benefits most; the subclass's Wisdom saving throw effects work best when paired with high Strength and frequent Rage use.

Proficiencies

You gain proficiency in Intimidation if you lack it. Kalaka training also includes desert survival, blood-tracking, ritual scarification, ambush warfare, and fighting with spears, axes, curved blades, and improvised weapons.

Training & Initiation

An initiate must cross the desert alone with one weapon, one water skin, and no shelter. At the journey's end, they face a blood trial against an experienced Kalaka warrior. The initiate is accepted only after drawing blood, surviving the return journey, and declaring aloud the name of someone they will never allow to die unavenged.

Societal Perception

Ordinary people regard the Kalaka with a mixture of dread and gratitude. They are valued as caravan protectors and feared as judges who may turn a minor offense into a blood sentence. In many settlements, a Kalaka entering town causes doors to close, children to be hidden, and local criminals to flee before any accusation is spoken.
