Machinist

The Machinist is an Artificer who turns invention into mobility, engineering into warfare, and machinery into an extension of their own body. Machinists construct several specialized machines, each built around a physical cockpit or control station. Their creations cannot act independently or be controlled remotely; the Machinist must personally climb inside and operate them. A Machinist excels at choosing the right platform for the situation, darting across the battlefield, providing transportation, and pushing machines beyond their safe limits. That extra performance generates Heat, creating a constant risk-reward struggle between reliable operation and spectacular overdrive.

SavesUses the Artificer's spell save DC and normal class defenses. While piloting a machine, you benefit from the machine's AC, platform defenses, and condition immunities, but you remain vulnerable to effects that target the machine or its occupants.

Spellcasting & Powers

The Machinist remains a spellcasting Artificer and uses the Artificer's normal spellcasting, prepared spells, spell slots, and spellcasting ability. This subclass does not grant an additional spell list.

Multiclassing

A Machinist uses the Artificer's normal multiclassing rules. Intelligence 13 is required to multiclass into or out of Artificer. The subclass is strongest with high Intelligence and benefits from Constitution or Dexterity for survivability when outside the machine.

Proficiencies

You gain proficiency with Land Vehicles and Air Vehicles. You also gain proficiency with Tinker's Tools if you do not already have it. Your machine's attacks and features use Intelligence.

Training & Initiation

An aspiring Machinist begins by learning structural engineering, arcane power regulation, vehicle handling, and emergency repair. Initiation traditionally requires building a functional cockpit, surviving a supervised test run, and completing a live rescue or combat exercise while personally piloting the prototype.

Societal Perception

Machinists are admired as daring engineers, distrusted as walking arsenals, and frequently treated as eccentric celebrities. Villages value their transport and rescue machines, while rulers and generals often want to license, regulate, or seize their designs.
