Bards of the College of Hard-Won Tales believe that triumph is cheap without adversity. They turn missed steps, broken plans, and painful defeats into lessons that strengthen their companions. Their performances are candid rather than polished, full of cracked notes, grim humor, and stories that end with someone standing back up. In battle, they specialize in making failure useful: a botched attack becomes an opening, a failed save becomes a warning, and a dangerous wound becomes proof that the party can endure.

Multiclassing

No additional requirements beyond the Bard's multiclassing rules. Charisma is the key ability for this subclass, and its features work best with regular access to Bardic Inspiration.

You gain no new weapon, armor, tool, or saving throw proficiencies. Your training centers on oral history, crisis counseling, battlefield improvisation, and turning personal setbacks into persuasive performance.

Training & Initiation

An initiate spends a year traveling with a veteran member, recording the failures of ordinary people without mocking them. They must then perform a public account of their own greatest mistake, explain what it taught them, and use the performance to help someone else endure a similar hardship. Only after this rite are they permitted to carry the college's lantern-mark.

Societal Perception

Ordinary people often find these bards comforting after a crisis but unsettling during peaceful times. Survivors and soldiers value them highly, while nobles and officials may dislike their habit of turning embarrassing failures into memorable public stories.
