Oath Of The Exiled

The Oath of the Exiled is sworn by paladins who have lost their homeland, faith, rank, or place among the respectable. They do not draw strength from belonging; they draw it from endurance. Their miracles are spare and practical: a warning shouted through smoke, a wounded ally dragged from danger, a hostile blow turned aside by stubborn defiance. Exiled paladins are protectors of outsiders, fugitives, refugees, and anyone abandoned by an institution that claimed to be righteous. Their mechanical niche is defensive skirmishing and emergency protection, with modest benefits that become stronger when the paladin is isolated or protecting a vulnerable ally.

You are a half-caster using the Paladin's normal Spellcasting feature. Your oath spells are always prepared, and you use Charisma for your spellcasting ability.

Command A terse order used to stop violence or create an opening for escape.
Sanctuary Protects a vulnerable person who has nowhere else to go.

2nd-Level Spells

Aid Strengthens companions who must endure a difficult journey or desperate defense.
Calm Emotions Quells panic among refugees, prisoners, or divided allies.
Warding Bond Represents sharing danger with someone the paladin has sworn to protect.

3rd-Level Spells

Beacon of Hope Restores resolve to people who have been abandoned or defeated.
Dispel Magic Breaks magical restraints, seals, and oppressive protections.
Meld into Stone Offers a grim method of hiding from pursuers in hostile territory.

4th-Level Spells

Freedom of Movement Helps an ally escape bindings, difficult terrain, and forced confinement.
Otiluke's Resilient Sphere Temporarily shelters a vulnerable ally from overwhelming danger.
Stoneskin Hardens the body against the violence of a final stand.

Multiclassing

No special multiclassing requirements beyond the 2024 Paladin's normal requirements. The subclass features rely on Charisma, saving throw DCs, and Aura of Protection, so Charisma remains the most valuable secondary ability. Defiance of the Banished uses Channel Divinity and does not grant additional uses.

Proficiencies

You gain no additional weapon, armor, tool, or saving throw proficiencies. The oath is practiced through escort work, survival drills, defensive formations, and protecting people while retreating under pressure.

Training & Initiation

A candidate becomes an Exiled paladin after surviving a formal or symbolic severing from a former identity. The rite may involve burning a uniform, breaking a seal of office, walking out of a walled city, or publicly refusing an unjust command. The candidate then spends time protecting people who cannot repay them, usually on roads, in refugee camps, or among the politically condemned. The oath is not sworn to a throne or temple, but to the principle that abandonment does not erase a person's worth.

Societal Perception

Common people often trust an Exiled paladin more than a uniformed authority, especially in places where officials have failed them. Nobles, commanders, and established temples may view the oath as a dangerous rejection of hierarchy. Some communities see these paladins as omens of political unrest; others leave food and blankets at their doors.
