Circle of the Ancient Dragons

The Circle of the Ancient Dragons preserves the oldest instincts of the wild: predation, migration, territorial defense, and elemental fury. Its druids commune with primordial dragon spirits, allowing them to assume draconic forms, exhale supernatural energy, and turn their own bodies into living conduits for nature’s oldest powers. Unlike dragon-worshipers, these druids do not serve individual dragons. They honor the ancient ecological forces that dragons embody.

Spellcasting & Powers

You remain a full Druid spellcaster. Your Druid spells use Wisdom for their spell attack rolls and saving throw DCs. Draconic Aspect enhances your spellcasting with elemental damage, defenses, and a limited breath weapon.

4th-Level Spells

Freedom of Movement Lets the druid move like a dragon through difficult terrain and magical restraints.

Polymorph A versatile transformation spell that echoes the circle’s mastery of primal forms.

5th-Level Spells

Commune with Nature Connects the druid to the vast ecological memory preserved by the circle.
Conjure Elemental Calls an elemental servant to embody the druid’s chosen primal force.

Wall of Stone Raises durable boundaries around sacred territory or endangered allies.

Multiclassing

A character multiclassing into this subclass must meet the Druid multiclassing prerequisite: Wisdom 13 or higher. The subclass does not grant additional weapon, armor, or saving throw proficiencies.

Proficiencies

As a Druid, you use Wisdom for your spellcasting and have proficiency with light armor, medium armor, shields, and Druids’ Focuses as defined by the base class. This circle adds proficiency in either Perception or Survival at level 6.

Training & Initiation

A prospective member spends a full season living at the boundary between civilization and wilderness, learning to read territorial signs, weather patterns, animal behavior, and elemental changes. Initiation occurs at an ancient natural site where the candidate survives a symbolic trial chosen by a dragon spirit. The final rite involves placing a hand on a fossil, scale, or eggshell and accepting a personal oath of guardianship rather than swearing obedience to any living dragon.

Societal Perception

Most people view these druids with a mixture of respect and unease. Rural communities may welcome them as protectors against monsters and natural disasters, while rulers and merchants often fear their opposition to mining, deforestation, and dragon exploitation. Dragons tend to regard them as intriguing rivals, useful intermediaries, or dangerous trespassers.
