The Hollow Gape
The earth screams where the pickaxe struck too deep.
A sprawling network of iron-rich tunnels surrounding a terrifying vertical shaft that plunges into the subterranean dark. Rusted machinery and decaying scaffolds cling to the walls of a central abyss that seems to swallow all light.
The constant, low-frequency hum of wind rushing up the central shaft; the smell of ozone and wet iron; flickering phosphorescent moss providing dim light; the chilling sensation of being watched from the darkness below.
☠ Threat
Xal-Thul, a Void-Touched Beholder, has claimed the bottom of the shaft as its throne. It uses its eye rays to manipulate the remaining miners' ghosts and the local fauna, dragging them down to the Gape to be consumed or transformed into eyeless servants. Its presence causes the very walls of the mine to bleed thick, black ichor.
History
Originally a state-funded venture to extract rare Star-Iron, the mine was abandoned eighty years ago when workers broke into a pocket of primordial shadow. The kingdom sealed the upper gates after the foreman reported seeing an eye the size of a wagon opening in the depths. Now, it serves as a haunt for outcasts and things that thrive in the crushing pressure of the deep.
