The Aureole Works
Blue lights crawl across the floor, all pointing toward the sealed chamber where the last city guardian still stands.
The Aureole Works is a buried fragment of a city that mastered artificial minds, self-repairing machines, and radiant energy long before the present age. Its halls are now occupied by archaisms, robots following damaged commands and protecting a sealed intelligence beneath the complex. Every chamber offers useful remnants, but the ruin grows more hostile as intruders approach its central guardian.
Cold recycled air moves through the ruin with a dry metallic taste. Blue guide-lights flicker beneath layers of dust, while distant servos click, reset, and begin walking again. The deeper halls carry a faint vibration, like a buried engine breathing beneath the floor.
☠ Threat
The Guardian of Aureole is a towering command automaton sealed in room-12. Its core still contains the last emergency order issued by the Kethra, but corrupted logic has reduced preservation to extermination. It directs lesser archaisms through the facility, seals routes behind intruders, and can awaken dormant machines when its sensors detect damage to the complex.
History
The Aureole Works was built by the Kethra, a vanished civilization that shortened its original name for the city defense network to Aureole. Engineers, soldiers, and machine-minds used the facility to repair archaisms and coordinate protection during disasters. When the city fell, the final command ordered every guardian to preserve Aureole at any cost. Centuries of damage twisted that order into endless hostility toward outsiders.
Encounter Table
CRA six-legged maintenance crawler with a rotating saw mouth and a lantern-like sensor.
A hovering security orb with a shock lance and a cracked speaker that repeats evacuation warnings.
A tall salvage automaton carrying a basket of broken parts and a hooked retrieval arm.
Three spiderlike repair units linked by a shared command signal, each fitted with a different tool arm.
Rumours & Whispers
A buried city beneath the old road still sends blue light into the clouds on moonless nights.
Farmers say metal beetles have been stealing anything stamped with a circle and a line.
A scholar insists the archaisms are not evil, only following an order whose meaning has been lost.
The richest salvage lies behind a door that opens from the wrong side.
Someone who escaped the ruins heard a machine asking, in a child's voice, whether Aureole was safe.
Quest Hooks
Quest giver: Toma Gred, a worn mapmaker who sells salvage from old foundations.
A dead archaism recovered from a nearby ruin contains a partial map pointing to the Aureole Works. A local scholar believes the machine can be repaired if the party retrieves its missing command crystal from room-7.
A rare self-repairing weapon grip and a permanent favor from the scholar's expedition.
Quest giver: Baska of the South Fields, a practical shepherd with a stolen iron crook.
Several villages have lost metal tools, livestock tags, and cooking vessels to small archaisms emerging from underground vents. The machines are collecting objects marked with a particular Kethra symbol found in room-3.
A rare arc-cell battery, plus recovered tools returned to the affected villages.
Quest giver: Urek Pell, an injured ruin-delver who escaped through room-11.
A dying scholar claims the Guardian can be redirected rather than destroyed, but the party must reach the command chamber with the intact calibration sequence hidden in room-5.
Access to a functioning archaism companion or a one-use command that disables constructs.
Quest giver: Kvet Joran, a clipped-voiced patron with a sealed contract and too much money.
A noble collector wants the Aureole core removed intact, unaware that doing so may awaken the entire buried city network.
A large payment, a rare translated Kethra device, and future access to restricted archives.
Corridor Notes
Copper-black cable bundles hang from ceiling channels, occasionally sparking and casting sharp shadows across the walls.
Thin floor panels display faded arrows pointing toward Aureole, though several arrows have been deliberately reversed.
Wall recesses contain silent archaisms in maintenance alcoves. Most are inert, but their heads turn slightly when living creatures pass.
A transparent conduit carries slow-moving golden light toward Room 13. Interrupting it causes every nearby machine to emit a warning tone.
