Vaul's Crypt
The dead king's heart still beats beneath the stones.
The crypt lies beneath a ruined funerary chapel, its tombs expanded into a sprawling underground complex by generations of corpse-priests. Its outer chambers remain defensible, but deeper halls have been warped by the awakening spirit of a dead ruler. Every passage seems arranged to guide intruders toward the sealed royal vault.
Cold, stale air hangs beneath the earth, carrying wet stone, old incense, and the sweet rot of embalming herbs. Blue witch-lights flicker in cracked skull niches, while distant chains scrape and a slow heartbeat seems to pulse beneath the deepest floors.
☠Threat
King Vaul, a deathless monarch, is slowly reclaiming his body from the royal vault. His spirit whispers through the crypt, animating corpses, twisting holy symbols, and urging the living to open the final seal. If restored, Vaul will command every dead thing in the surrounding valley and turn the abandoned chapel into the center of a new funerary kingdom.
History
The crypt was built three centuries ago by the Ashen Choir, a priesthood devoted to preserving the remains of King Vaul. When Vaul began ruling through dreams after death, the priests expanded the complex into a prison, placing sacred wards, false tombs, and sacrificial chambers around his vault. The order eventually vanished, leaving only sealed doors and restless servants behind.
Encounter Table
CRA patrol of dead attendants carries sealed orders from Vaul and pauses to listen at every door.
Blackwater corpses ooze from floor drains, leaving wet handprints on walls and doors.
A skeletal bell-ringer drags a chain of tiny bronze bells and tries to summon reinforcements from nearby rooms.
A pale noble spirit wanders the lower halls, mistaking living adventurers for servants and demanding news from the surface.
