Sundered Wing Crypt
A blue flame burns without fuel beneath the carving of a wing being cut from the sun.
The Sundered Wing Crypt was built beneath a hill of pale limestone to imprison Sheshar, a rogue angel whose visions promised the burning of a nearby city. Its chambers combine funerary vaults, star charts, devotional shrines, and cruel celestial mechanisms designed to test anyone seeking the captive. The deeper halls still function, and every disturbance weakens the seals around the prisoner.
Cold, dry air carries the smell of old incense, powdered limestone, and faint ozone. Blue-white radiance leaks from star-shaped cracks in the walls, while distant chimes ring whenever the captive angel shifts in its chains.
☠ Threat
Sheshar, the captive rogue angel, remains bound in room 9 by chains fed through the surrounding shrines. It is a powerful celestial driven by a prophecy that Bel Sarak must burn before it can become a source of greater ruin. Every broken seal restores part of its sight, and if freed, Sheshar will rise through the crypt and unleash radiant devastation upon the city.
History
The crypt was raised by the Bell Keepers, a funerary order who cleared a limestone quarry beneath the hill and converted its galleries into a prison. They captured Sheshar after the angel descended over Bel Sarak and declared the city marked for cleansing. The order built celestial traps, chained the angel beneath the deepest vault, and stationed shrines along every approach to keep its visions from returning.
Encounter Table
CRWinged hounds drawn by the angel's leaking radiance.
Silver-masked penitents carrying broken bells and scraps of prayer parchment.
A floating golden eye surrounded by tiny feathered wings, seeking anyone who has read the prophecy.
Rumours & Whispers
The hill gives off a bell sound on clear nights, though no bell tower stands nearby.
A winged prisoner is buried beneath the crypt, and it has already dreamed the names of everyone in Bel Sarak.
The Bell Keepers did not die in the crypt. Their bones are still walking somewhere below.
A treasure vault contains a key that can unlock an angel, a king, or a city gate, depending on who turns it.
The old prophecy was written backward, and the angel may have been guarding the city rather than condemning it.
Quest Hooks
Quest giver: Hessa, a soft-spoken city watch clerk
A courier from Bel Sarak reports that children across the city are dreaming of a chained figure beneath the hill. The dreams began after grave robbers opened the crypt's entrance.
A rare sunstone ward and legal pardon for any recovered relics
Quest giver: Orren Vale, an aging bell keeper
The Bell Keepers have lost contact with their final warden. They ask the party to restore the shrine network before Sheshar regains its full prophetic sight.
A celestial reliquary that grants resistance to radiant damage once per day
Quest giver: Tamsin of the South Steps
A dying astrologer claims Sheshar's prophecy is real, but says the angel misunderstood the moment of the city's destruction. The party must reach the captive and learn what the vision actually showed.
A divination favor from the astrologer's order and a rare pearl of power
Corridor Notes
Thin silver feathers lie in corners, each warm to the touch and faintly luminous. They vanish into sparks if carried more than a few paces.
The walls are carved with repeated images of a wing being cut from a falling sun. Some carvings have fresh scratches around the angel's face.
Small bronze bells hang inside sealed niches. They ring only when a creature carrying divine magic passes.
A narrow line of golden dust marks the safest route through the crypt, though it occasionally stops and resumes somewhere impossible.
