The Vale Crypt
Beneath the ruined chapel, a dead dynasty still bargains for one more living soul.
The crypt lies beneath a ruined mortuary chapel, its upper halls serving as storage, prison, and shrine before descending into a sealed royal burial complex. The dead are not restless by accident: every chamber still feeds a failing ritual designed to preserve one ancient ruler's soul.
Cold, dry air carries the smell of dust, candle grease, and old bones. Blue corpse-lights flicker in iron sconces, while distant chains, whispered prayers, and the slow scrape of stone follow explorers through the crypt.
☠Threat
The crypt is ruled by the Wight-King Odran, a fused undead intelligence formed from generations of preserved royal memories. He cannot leave while the lower seals hold, but his influence leaks through whispers, dreams, and animated corpses. Each failed shrine weakens the final barrier, allowing Odran to command stronger servants and eventually possess a living body.
History
The crypt was built three centuries ago by the embalmer-priest Odran Vale for a dynasty terrified of death. Its architects carved burial chambers beneath a sacred chapel and installed a ritual that preserved the rulers' memories inside one chosen vessel. When the last monarch refused the rite, the priests imprisoned him, completed the ceremony, and sealed the complex after the resulting spirit began demanding new souls.
