The Low Cellar

Warm foul water trickles beneath the door while tiny claws scratch behind the grain bins.

4 roomsBasementeasy

The Low Cellar is a cramped service basement beneath a long-abandoned grain house. Its narrow chambers are packed with ruined stores, broken shelving, and the descendants of pests that have grown bold and unnaturally clever.

The air is close, damp, and warm with the smell of spoiled grain. Water ticks through cracked masonry, tiny claws scrape behind the walls, and the only light comes from guttering candles, pale fungus, and gaps around warped doors.

☠ Threat

At the heart of the basement nests Mother Gnash, a swollen giant rat that has fed on alchemical grain. She is clever enough to use doors, bells, and flooding channels, and she commands a breeding swarm from the L-shaped chamber beyond room-0. If left alone, her young will spread through the neighborhood drains within days.

History

The basement was built by grain merchant Gtakh Vardis beneath his first warehouse, using it to store seed, lamp oil, and winter food. After a flood ruined the upper building, locals shortened its name from Vardis's Low Storage to the Low Cellar. Decades of neglect let rats nest in the warm cistern below, and recent tampering has made them unusually aggressive.
