Vhalzareth's Ruins

The buried dragon still dreams, and the ruins dream with it.

35 rooms✦ruins✦deadly

The ruins of a dracolich's subterranean empire lie beneath a shattered fortress, their halls rebuilt around a massive necromantic engine. The dungeon descends through prisons, shrines, libraries, and trapworks toward the preserved lair of an undead dragon whose mind has infected the stone itself.

“
Cold, stale air carries the smells of wet stone, old ash, and embalming spices. Blue corpse-lights flicker in cracked sconces while distant claws scrape behind walls, and every chamber seems to hum with the dracolich's buried heartbeat.

☠ Threat

Vhalzareth, the Ashen Coil, is a dracolich whose body lies in the deepest vault while its consciousness flows through the dungeon's phylactery lattice. The creature manipulates doors, corpses, and memories to lure intruders downward. Every death strengthens its control, and the longer the party remains, the more rooms awaken as extensions of the dragon's undead mind.

History

The fortress was raised by the tyrant wyrm Vhalzareth, who ruled a valley through tribute and necromancy. Beneath it, he constructed halls for dissecting souls, cataloging aberrant mutations, and forging phylacteries from star-metal. When rival kingdoms finally breached the fortress, Vhalzareth completed his transformation, buried the complex beneath the ruins, and continued his experiments in silence.
