Kivuli Crypt

Blue flames tremble in the floor cracks while every carved name seems newly disturbed.

14 roomscryptmedium

The crypt lies beneath a weathered hill shrine, its upper chambers built for public remembrance and its lower vaults reserved for a forbidden funerary rite. The dead are mostly quiet, but something beneath the sealed round crypt has begun reclaiming names, memories, and living bodies.

Cold air leaks through every seam, carrying the smells of wet limestone, old incense, and iron. Candle flames burn blue in the shrine chambers, while distant knocks travel through the walls from the sealed lower crypt. Dust lies thick except where something barefoot has passed recently.

☠ Threat

The main danger is Mzazi Sefu, the Name-Bound Warden, a dead priest fused to the crypt's black funerary seal. It cannot leave the deepest chambers, but it sends bone-servants through the corridors and steals the names of intruders, causing allies to forget one another and weakening their ability to resist its commands.

History

The crypt was built by the Kivuli Fellowship, immigrants from a sun-baked eastern land whose burial customs were feared by the local nobility. They carved the upper shrine for common graves, then dug deeper to house a guardian bound by names, incense, and a black stone seal. After the fellowship vanished, caretakers sealed the lower vaults and abandoned the hill.

Corridor Notes

Between Room 1 and Room 3

Small funerary niches line the walls, each holding a clay token stamped with a different household mark. Several tokens have been removed recently.

Outside Room 8

A thin trail of gray grave dust crosses the floor, vanishing beneath the locked door toward Room 12.

Between Room 10 and Room 14

Iron bells hang from cracked ceiling hooks, but their clappers have been cut away. Touching the supporting chains makes the bells tremble soundlessly.

Between Room 4 and Room 9

Black candle stubs mark every third paving stone, and each bears the same unfamiliar sunburst seal found in Room 11.
