The Warned Crypt
A blue flame gutters in the skull-lamps, and something below is turning a page.
The Warned Crypt is a compact burial complex cut beneath a hill whose stones are stained with candle soot and rainwater. Its outer chambers still resemble a place of worship, but the deeper rooms hold forbidden records, trapped reliquaries, and a dead keeper who refuses to surrender his charge.
Cold air leaks through every stone seam, carrying the smell of wet dust, old wax, and iron. Pale blue witchlight burns in cracked skull-lamps, while distant knocking travels through the walls whenever the crypt's guardian stirs.
☠ Threat
The main threat is Vardek, the Last Sexton, an oath-bound undead caretaker who believes every living intruder is a thief of the dead. He commands the crypt's lesser remains through written names and grows more violent when pages are removed from the library. If the seal beneath his dais is broken, he can pursue fugitives beyond the dungeon.
History
The crypt was built by the undertaker-priest Sava of the Reed Flats after a plague filled the hilltop cemetery. She carved the first chambers as a place where the dead could be named, counted, and kept from restless return. Years later, fearful nobles added the library and sealed vaults, then bound the priest's successor to guard their hidden records forever.
Encounter Table
CRLoose bones knit themselves into a doglike shape, carrying scraps of parchment in their jaws.
A pallid corpse in a soaked burial shirt drags a shovel and mutters about unfinished graves.
A cluster of funeral masks floats through the air, whispering different names in overlapping voices.
Rumours & Whispers
The hill was called Warned Hill long before the crypt was built, because every mason who worked there heard someone counting beneath the ground.
A priest who entered the tomb returned with his shadow facing the wrong direction and died three days later.
The dead in the village cemetery are being moved one grave at a time, but no one has seen who does it.
A noble family still sends candles to the crypt every winter, though they deny owning any land near the hill.
A book below the hill can make the dead forget a living person's name.

A silver burial mask and the village's lasting protection from undead attacks
Quest giver: Eszter Varo, a quiet household solicitor

A sealed purse of 150 gold pieces and a favor from the household
Quest giver: Shusha, a shepherd from the hill road
The blue lights of the crypt have appeared in nearby fields, followed by missing livestock and footprints that end at sealed graves. The party must learn whether Vardek is breaking free or being deliberately summoned.

Corridor Notes
Small brass bells hang from black cords at ankle height. Most are silent, but one rings whenever an undead creature passes nearby.
The walls are set with narrow burial niches, many packed with finger bones and scraps of faded prayer cloth.
A thin trail of gray grave-salt marks the safest route through the eastern passage, though sections have been deliberately scuffed away.
Cold vapor gathers in the shape of kneeling figures near sealed doors, then disperses when approached.
