The Aethelgard Ossuary
The silence of the dead is broken by the rhythmic scraping of bone on stone.
A deep subterranean crypt carved into basalt, glowing with a persistent, unnatural violet phosphorescence. The air is stagnant and carries the biting chill of the grave, muffled by thick layers of ancient dust.
The smell of dry rot and ozone fills the air. A faint, constant humming vibrates through the floorboards, and blue torches in iron sconces provide dim, flickering light that casts elongated, shivering shadows.
☠ Threat
The Shadow-Wrought Spirit of Lord Valerius Aethelgard, a powerful Wraith-Knight, commands the spirits within. He seeks to siphon the vitality of living trespassers to fully manifest back into the physical world and reclaim his lost kingdom. His presence causes localized necrotic rot and draws weaker undead to his service from the surrounding moors.
History
Built three centuries ago by the Aethelgard dynasty to house their noble dead, the ossuary was intended as a place of rest. However, the family patriarch sought to cheat death using a forbidden artifact known as the Hollow Heart, which backfired and bound the entire lineage to the material plane as restless spirits. Now, the crypt serves as a localized rift between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell.
