Marrow-King's Vault
The air tastes of powdered bone and centuries of stagnant regret.
A sprawling subterranean crypt carved into white limestone, designed to house the remains of a forgotten dynasty. Every surface is intricately engraved with glyphs that pulse with a faint, necrotic rhythm.
The smell of cold earth and ozone lingers in the air. Lighting is provided by dim, violet Everburn lanterns that cast long, flickering shadows. The temperature is unnaturally cold, causing breath to fog.
☠ Threat
The Spirit of Kaethas acts as a sentient miasma that drifts through the vents and cracks of the dungeon. This presence can possess inanimate objects or corpses, forcing players to deal with environmental hazards and sudden ambushes. If the party destroys the Soul-Jar in the deepest room, the miasma will dissipate; otherwise, the vault will eventually rebuild any defeated undead inhabitants.
History
The vault was constructed five centuries ago by Kaethas the Flayer, a royal architect obsessed with preserving the bodies of the Silvercrown Kings. Kaethas eventually turned to necromancy to ensure he would never have to stop his work, but his own creations rebelled, sealing him within his greatest masterpiece. Now, the vault serves as a vessel for his unrefined malice and the restless souls of the kings he sought to preserve.
Encounter Table
CRA headless horse that gallops through the halls, attempting to trample the party.
A swarm of severed hands that drop from the ceiling to choke intruders.
A patrolling guardian seeking intruders to add to the crypt's collection.
Rumours & Whispers
The names of every person who enters the vault are etched onto the walls before they even arrive.
Kaethas didn't build the vault to keep the kings in, he built it to keep something else out.
A legendary blade of light is hidden in the chamber of gold, but it's protected by the gold itself.
The violet lanterns in the vault are fueled by the souls of the architect's own family.
