The Gdornuu Vault

Blue light leaks from the floor while something enormous pulls once against its chains beneath the northern door.

8 roomscavemedium

The Blackreach Vault lies beneath a shelf of glassy stone, its rounded chambers cut into a natural cave and reinforced with white ceramic brick. Once a shared dormitory, laboratory, archive, and prison for the five White Asphodel schools, it now shelters undead scholars sustained by the aura of a captive star-born entity.

Cold mineral air presses through every chamber, carrying the smells of wet stone, lamp oil, old paper, and faintly sweet decay. Blue-white radiance leaks from cracks in the rock, while distant chains scrape at irregular intervals and dead voices murmur behind sealed doors.

☠ Threat

Gdornuu, a star-born magical creature, hangs chained in the deepest chamber. Its aura keeps the dead scholars moving and distorts memory, gravity, and spellcraft throughout the vault. Some undead retain enough intellect to restore the old experiments, while others seek the release rite, believing that Gdornuu's freedom will return them to life.

History

The Blackreach Vault was built by the White Asphodels, five secretive magical schools that borrowed their name from an old flower in their distant homeland. They carved the first chambers as a shared dormitory and archive, then expanded them into laboratories for forbidden necromancy. After an experiment involving Gdornuu went wrong, the alliance imprisoned the creature, converted the lower rooms into cells, and abandoned the vault when the schools turned on one another.

The Asphodel Starbreaker, a single-use weapon effective against aberrations and constructs

Corridor Notes

Between Room 1 and the eastern chambers

Five shallow copper inlays run along the walls, each marked with a different school seal. When a living creature passes, one line briefly glows and points toward the control center.

North passage from Room 1

Small black handprints stain the stone at knee height, as though dozens of children tried to climb toward the dormitory. The prints end abruptly at the door to Room 2.

Passage between Room 3 and Room 8

A broken speaking tube runs through the ceiling, carrying fragments of whispered lectures from the research rooms. Listening for one minute reveals a warning about the chained prisoner.

Near Room 6 and Room 7

Iron rings and scraps of numbered parchment line the deeper corridors, remnants of the vault's prison period. Some rings tremble whenever Gdornuu shifts its chains.
