The Iron Duke's Bastion
The rhythmic grinding of ancient gears echoes through halls of cold steel.
A fortress of grey stone and brass piping, this castle hums with a persistent, low-frequency vibration. Within, clockwork sentinels patrol the lightless halls, fueled by a central furnace that has not cooled in centuries.
The air smells of ozone, hot oil, and stale copper. Rhythmic ticking and the hiss of steam replace silence, while dim blue light pulses from crystalline lamps in the ceiling.
☠ Threat
The Master Protocol is a distributed intelligence housed in the castle walls that controls every trap and construct. It seeks to convert all biological matter into 'inert fuel' to keep the Great Gear turning, using its mechanical children to harvest intruders for their iron and calcium.
History
Built by the reclusive Artificer-Duke Valerius to house his greatest invention, the fortress was designed to operate without human intervention. After a fatal malfunction in the Duke's soul-binding experiments, the castle's automated systems went into a permanent defensive lockdown, perceiving any organic visitor as a biological contaminant to be neutralized.
