Marrow-Scribe's Crypt
The dead remember every trespass, and the crypt remembers every dead.
The crypt lies beneath a ruined mortuary temple, its burial halls expanded into a maze of libraries, shrines, and punishment chambers. The dead do not rest quietly here, and every route eventually bends toward the sealed tomb of a ruler who learned to preserve souls instead of bodies.
Cold, stale air hangs beneath the earth, carrying the scents of wet stone, lamp oil, old parchment, and disturbed dust. Blue witchfire flickers in wall niches, while distant chains clink and faint whispers travel through the masonry. Every corridor seems colder near the sealed tombs, as though something below is breathing.
☠ Threat
Veyra Marrow-Scribe now exists as a half-formed wight surrounded by stolen memories. He can speak through books, statues, and corpses throughout the crypt, luring intruders with false voices from lost loved ones. Each soul absorbed by his archive strengthens him, and if he completes the rite in room-5, every corpse buried beneath the nearby town will rise under his command.
History
The crypt was built three centuries ago by Veyra Marrow-Scribe, a priest who promised grieving families that their dead could be preserved through sacred memory rites. When the temple's coffers ran dry, Veyra turned to prisoners and debtors, carving their memories from living minds and binding them into an underground archive. The temple was sealed after the victims rose as whispering undead, but Veyra's soul remained anchored below.
Encounter Table
CRA cluster of skulls rolls and whispers through the corridors, gathering into a crude humanoid shape when cornered.
A headless corpse in funeral armor follows the scent of living blood, carrying a rusted ceremonial sword.
Pale moths with human faces flutter around blue witchfire and drain warmth from exposed skin.
A translucent mourner walks silently between rooms, repeating the final words of the last person killed in the crypt.
Rumours & Whispers
A sealed crypt beneath the ruined temple contains the memories of everyone who has ever died nearby.
The dead priest below can wear the face of anyone who speaks his name.
A maze under the temple changes whenever the funeral bells ring.
Grave robbers who entered the crypt returned rich, but none remembered where they found their gold.
The old shrine flames can make an undead king mortal again.
Quest Hooks
Quest giver: Mira Voss, an anxious undertaker
A local undertaker asks the party to recover a ledger stolen from a family vault. The book contains the names of townsfolk whose memories were taken generations ago and now powers Veyra's ritual.
350 gp, a family heirloom, and free burial services for the party
Quest giver: Lord Teren Vale, desperate and ashamed
A young noble has begun speaking in the voice of an ancestor who died in the crypt. The voice gives accurate directions to the dungeon and begs the party to destroy the ancestor's preserved memory.
A signet ring worth 250 gp and political favor in the region
Quest giver: Sister Halwen, keeper of a roadside chapel
A ruined shrine's sacred flame has gone out, causing restless dead to appear in nearby villages. Relighting the altars in rooms 6 and 9 may weaken the crypt's master.
A blessed weapon, healing potions, and the chapel's lasting protection
Corridor Notes
Thin copper wires run from door to door at ankle height, each strung with tiny funeral bells. Most have been cut, but three still ring when disturbed.
A trail of black candle wax marks the safest turns through the crypt and ends abruptly at a blank wall.
Names have been scratched into the stone, some ancient and some fresh. Several are followed by the same symbol: an open eye inside a coffin.
A narrow drainage channel carries cold, reddish water toward the shrine chambers. It occasionally pulses as though something large moved beneath it.
