The Asphodel Vault
Five dead lamps ring a pillar of white stone, while chains groan somewhere beyond the frost-black door.
Beneath the earth lies the Asphodel Vault, a sealed research fortress carved into a cavern beneath the deep crust. Its rooms once housed scholars, prisoners, and experiments, but the facility now groans around a captive magical being whose restraints are beginning to fail.
Cold mineral air presses through every chamber, carrying the smells of wet stone, old lamp oil, and dust sealed for centuries. Pale blue fungus glows in cracks beneath the floors, while distant knocks travel through the rock and chains sometimes clink where no living hand pulls them.
☠ Threat
The main threat is Varesh-of-the-Deep, a powerful astral creature bound in room-11 by iron anchors, engraved crystal, and layered spells. Centuries of torment have made its magic unstable. Each broken ward awakens dead researchers, distorts gravity, and fills the dungeon with psychic commands. If freed violently, Varesh may lash out at every living mind nearby, but if approached with the original release rite, it may become an ally or depart peacefully.
History
The White Asphodels, a secret alliance of five powerful magical schools, carved this facility into a cavern far below the surface. They used it as a laboratory, dormitory, fortress, and prison for experiments too dangerous to conduct aboveground. Their greatest project was the containment of a star-born creature whose magic could reshape living souls. When the alliance collapsed, the staff abandoned the vault and left every ward running.
Encounter Table
CRSkeletons wearing fragments of old academic uniforms, carrying tools rather than weapons.
A drifting undead researcher whose face is hidden behind a cracked crystal mask.
A cluster of pale, hand-sized undead cave scavengers with lamp-like eyes.
A translucent former guard pulled partly into the stone, leaving only its armored torso visible.
Rumours & Whispers
Miners say a white flower grows beneath the deepest rock, and every person who picks one returns without a shadow.
A dead scholar has been seen walking near the old mine road, asking whether the fifth lamp is lit.
The vault contains a creature that can grant one wish, but the wish always belongs to someone else.
The five schools that built the place erased the names of their own students from every record.
When the underground bells ring without sound, something in the dark has opened its eyes.
Quest Hooks
Quest giver: Juma Rekk, a scarred mine foreman
A mining crew broke into the vault and only one worker returned, babbling about a voice beneath the world. The party must enter before the breach widens and awakens the entire facility.
A sealed vein of deep crystal worth 400 gp and a map to an untouched underdark route
Quest giver: Safa Dast, an anxious archivist
A scholar wants the White Asphodels' research recovered before rival mages learn where it was hidden. The most valuable notes are scattered between rooms 2 and 4, but the records implicate the scholar's own institution.
A spell scroll of summon elemental and a favor from a magical college
Quest giver: Berek Two-Coins, a village healer plagued by shared nightmares
The party discovers that the creature in the vault is intelligent and has been calling through the dreams of nearby villagers. They must decide whether to maintain the prison, repair the release rite, or destroy the failing anchors.
A blessing that grants advantage on one future saving throw against possession or charm
Quest giver: Kesh the Pale, a skeletal researcher who approaches under a white flag
Undead scholars are gathering around the old control chamber, trying to restart the facility and resume its experiments. Their leader believes the party can provide living subjects for the final stage.
A cache of alchemical reagents, three potions of greater healing, and proof of an old magical crime
Corridor Notes
White ceramic plaques bearing five different school seals are set into the walls. Several have been violently scratched away, but each still gives off a faint warmth when touched.
Thin copper tubes run through the ceilings and emit occasional whispers in five overlapping voices. The voices repeat fragments of old research notes and warnings.
Patches of corpse-lace fungus grow around old bloodstains. Disturbing it releases a bitter odor and causes nearby undead to turn toward the disturbance.
