A series of damp, claustrophobic chambers hidden beneath the ruins of Castle Blackreach. Ancient runes carved into the masonry pulse with a dim, sickly blue light, signaling active magical defenses.
The air is frigid and smells of ozone and damp earth. A low-frequency hum vibrates through the floors, occasionally interrupted by the scratching of unseen claws and distant, mournful wails.

The Echo of Alaric, a vengeful specter of the former Duke, seeks to complete his ascension to lichdom using the life force of any intruders. He controls the magical resonance of the Undercroft, allowing him to manipulate the very walls and shadows against the party. His influence grows stronger the deeper one ventures into the vault.
History
Duke Alaric originally constructed these basements to house his extensive collection of forbidden arcane scrolls and to silence his political rivals. Following a failed ritual that claimed his life and cursed the estate, the basement was sealed and forgotten. For decades, the magical energy has leaked, twisting the architecture and its remaining inhabitants into spectral versions of their former selves.
