The Grayfall Mine
Cold blue lamps burn over an ore scale still waiting for the last load.
The Silt-Cleared Mine was abandoned when its miners broke into a buried seam of blue iron and awakened the machinery beneath it. The upper workings are stripped and unstable, but sealed chambers below still contain ore, forgotten tools, and constructs following orders that no living foreman remembers.
Cold, stale air drifts through the exhausted shafts, carrying the smell of wet iron, lamp oil, and old dust. Every few minutes, stone ticks as the mine settles, while distant metal knocks echo from passages that should be empty. Pale blue mineral veins provide the only light beyond the entrance.
☠ Threat
Kezh, the Drain-Warden, is a squat iron guardian built to keep the mine clear of obstructions. Decades without instructions have reduced its orders to a cruel routine: repair the shafts, recover blue iron, and eliminate anything breathing below ground. It commands lesser mining constructs through vibrations carried by the rails and can reactivate dormant machines during the battle.
History
The mine was cut beneath a ridge after miners cleared away a landslide called the Grayfall. Its foreman, Tamas Krek, discovered blue iron in the lower rock and ordered a sealed workshop built around it. The smiths forged tireless digging machines, but the central guardian interpreted the evacuation bell as an order to remove every living worker. The mine was abandoned and its entrance buried.
Encounter Table
CRA brass insect with a drill-shaped nose and a slate tag wired to its back.
A headless mining frame carrying a pick in each hand, its chest cavity packed with gray dust.
A rolling cluster of spare construct parts that assembles into a crude crab shape when approached.
A narrow alarm machine on three legs, dragging a bell that never rings aloud but shakes every nearby wall.
Rumours & Whispers
The old miners did not die in a cave-in. Something rang the evacuation bell from below.
Blue iron from Grayfall can hold an edge forever, but it makes nearby tools twitch at night.
A locked shrine still burns with cold flame, though the mine has been empty for generations.
A guardian in the lower works asks every intruder whether the shift is finished.
The mine's final foreman left behind a seal that commands the iron workers.
Quest Hooks
Quest giver: Borsh, a one-eyed ore buyer from the nearest quarry town
Ore traders want proof that blue iron still exists beneath the abandoned mine, but every previous expedition vanished after finding the sealed lower doors.
A purse of 75 gp and first claim on any legally recovered blue iron
Quest giver: Odelia Pava, an apprentice with a copied family work ledger
A mason's apprentice disappeared while searching the prison chamber for the fate of an ancestor who worked under Tamas Krek.
A finely made miner's hammer and a favor from the local builders' guild
Quest giver: Brother Gresk of the roadside shrine
The mine's old command shrine is needed to deactivate a construct patrol threatening a nearby road.
A scroll of lesser restoration and sanctuary at the shrine
Corridor Notes
Rusting ore carts sit on warped rails, each filled with smooth black stones that vibrate faintly when a construct approaches.
Small brass tally plates are nailed into the walls, recording loads of ore hauled out before the mine was abandoned.
Thin trails of gray dust lead away from Room 2 toward the deeper chambers, as if something heavy has been dragged through the corridors.
Old support beams bear fresh three-fingered scratches, too high and too clean to have been made by ordinary miners.
