The Ashen Keep
The dead court waits beneath the ruined towers, and the king still expects his subjects to kneel.
The Ashen Keep is a ruined castle whose lower halls survived long after its towers collapsed. Its prisons, shrines, and sealed treasury now shelter the remnants of a royal court that refuses to admit the kingdom is dead.
Cold stone sweats beneath faded royal banners. The air smells of wet iron, old incense, and sealed graves, while distant chains clink whenever the castle settles. Most chambers are lit by blue witchfire leaking from cracked wall sconces, leaving corners unnaturally dark.
☠ Threat
King Odran Halvorn rules the deepest hall as a deathless revenant, clad in blackened plate and crowned with iron thorns. He believes the adventurers are late envoys from the living kingdom and commands them to kneel, but his courtesy collapses into violence when they resist. Every undead servant in the keep is sustained by his oath to restore the queen, and destroying him without addressing that oath may awaken her soul as a greater menace.
History
The Ashen Keep was built by King Odran Halvorn as a mountain fortress and royal prison. When his queen died during a winter plague, Odran bargained with an oracle beneath the castle, promising the souls of every prisoner in exchange for her return. The queen rose without a soul, the dead guards followed, and the keep was sealed by surviving knights who could not destroy their king.

Rumours & Whispers
The old king still holds court below the ruins, and every visitor is expected to bring a gift for the dead queen.
A hidden treasury exists beneath the guardroom, but the vault kills anyone who speaks inside it.
The castle's prisoners were not executed. Their names were burned into the walls so the king could command them forever.

A silver bell can make the dead remember that they were once human.

Corridor Notes
Half-erased heraldic murals show the castle lord kneeling before a faceless crowned figure. The painted eyes seem to follow creatures carrying royal insignia.
Rusting murder holes overlook several passageways, though some conceal intact arrow mechanisms operated from hidden servant passages.
A thin draft carries the smell of roses and ash from deeper chambers. At irregular intervals, it whispers a single word, 'Remain.'
Boot prints appear in dust that no living creature seems to have made. They lead toward Room 12, then vanish before the boss chamber door.
