Smuggler's Mooncave
Where smugglers hid their trade, shapechangers built a nest and sealed something worse behind stone.
This cave complex was carved by hand around a natural limestone rift and later enlarged into a hideout, shrine, and storehouse. It feels small enough to clear in a night, but its tight passages and hidden side routes let threats strike from nowhere.
Cold mineral air drips from the ceiling in steady taps, carrying the scent of wet stone, bat guano, and old woodsmoke. Faint echoes travel through the passages, along with the scratch of claws and the occasional half-human laugh from somewhere deeper in the cave.
☠ Threat
The cave is controlled by a small pack of feral shapechangers led by a wounded werebear alpha who believes the shrine can cure or strengthen the curse. They are not numerous, but they know every crawlspace and strike as a pack. The deeper danger is the thing they keep hidden in the boss chamber, a half-remembered prisoner whose waking would turn the cave into a slaughterhouse.
History
Decades ago, a local smuggler clan widened a natural cave to hide ore, stolen relics, and fugitives from the road. When a silver-hungry pack of shapechangers took it over, they repurposed the store rooms into a nest, added crude defenses, and sealed their leader behind a secret wall after a failed rite went wrong. The cave has been half-abandoned ever since, but the pack still returns to feed, raid, and whisper to whatever is trapped below.
Encounter Table
CRLean cave bats that burst from ceiling cracks when the party makes too much noise.
One or two strogi scouts carrying scavenged knives and ropes, quick to flee if challenged.
A restless wererave moving alone with blood on its hands and a list of names scratched into bark.
A damaged werebear hunter sniffing for intruders and listening for the alpha's call.
Rumours & Whispers
The cave is haunted by a bear big enough to walk like a man and strong enough to split shields.
People who enter with silver jewelry hear singing in a voice that is not quite human.
A hidden smuggler tunnel inside the cave leads straight to a noble cellar.
At night, pale eyes sometimes glow from the cliff mouth, but no one has seen anyone come out.
The shrine inside the cave can either cure a curse or make it worse, depending on who speaks there.
