What Happened at the Broken Wagon
Read Aloud
A wagon lies on its side in the road ditch, one wheel split clean through. A man is tied up behind the wreck, gagged with a strip of sackcloth, while black chalk marks crawl over the axle and stones nearby. The road is still. Too still. Fresh bootprints lead off the shoulder and vanish into the grass. Someone planned this fast, and they meant to come back.
The Scene
NEUTRALINTERROGATIONBase DC 12Stakes If the party fails to read the road, the next ambush lands on worse ground and the caravan walks blind into it.
20 to 35 minutes
NPC Goal
Stay alive, avoid blame, and get back on the road before the cultists return.
Leverage
Cut the ropes, loosen the gag, and show the driver the marks are a warning, not a threat.
Player Approaches
- Promise protection for the next mile
- Offer water and a clean blade to cut the cords
- Show the driver the cult marks and ask what he saw before the ambush
- Use a calm voice and let him sit before asking names
NPC Gambits
- Sooth him first, question second
- Ask for one detail at a time
- Let him point at the marks instead of forcing a full story
- Have one PC check the knots while another talks
NPC Reactions
- The driver flinches at raised voices
- He answers fast if someone kneels to his level
- He lies when he thinks the question is a test
- He relaxes if the party names the road, the mile stone, or the caravan master
