Open the Gate Before the Alarm Wakes
Read Aloud
The chamber turns like a slow eye, all mirrored stone and white glare. A lone sentinel stands by the gate, motionless until the moonlight slides across the floor. Under the cracked altar, something metal clicks once, like a latch waking up.
The Scene
NEUTRALNEGOTIATIONBase DC 18Stakes If the ward holds, the party loses time, surprise, and access to the Sunwell secrets below. If it breaks loudly, the whole chamber becomes a beacon.
20 to 40 minutes, or one tense negotiation plus one round of opening the hatch.
NPC Goal
Keep the ward intact and make sure no one steals the wrong thing from below.
Leverage
The party can prove they seek the truth beneath the Sunwell, not the relics above it.
Player Approaches
- Name the quest and show respect for the ward.
- Offer a truthful oath that limits what you will take.
- Use the sun-discs to hide moonlight and control the ward's attention.
- Point out the hidden hatch and argue that the real breach is below, not at the gate.
NPC Gambits
- Appeal to duty.
- Offer a binding promise.
- Expose the ward's flaw.
- Trade knowledge for passage.
- Redirect blame to the sealed hatch.
NPC Reactions
- At first, the sentinel speaks in clipped duty language and refuses anything vague.
- It softens if the party shows they know the difference between the gate and the hatch.
- It hardens fast if someone lies, boasts, or insults the old oath.
