The Sorrow-Key Basin
The Sorrow-Key Basin guards a dungeon passage by demanding a secret from anyone who reaches for its key. It does not merely reveal the secret. It gives the secret a temporary life, creating a whispering shade that stalks the victim and repeats the confession in the voices of their companions.
The Sorrow-Key Basin
Defenses
Detection
“A waist-high stone basin filled with perfectly still black water. A silver key hangs above it on a thread of red silk, reflected in the water but never quite aligned with the real key. Faint blue fire burns beneath the basin without heat.”
Standard Engagement
A creature touches the silver key, touches the black water, or knowingly lies while standing within the basin's chamber.
On a trigger, ask for a secret or vow. If the victim refuses, make a move as hard as the situation demands, such as separating them from the group, revealing a dangerous truth, or summoning the confession shade. The basin does not pursue victims beyond the dungeon unless its key is removed.
The water becomes still again after one hour, or immediately after the living confession is resolved. The basin can trigger once per creature per day.
The character hears a loved one's voice whisper from the black water: Tell me what you hide. They must answer with a secret, make a solemn vow, or immediately Defy Danger using +WIS. On a miss, the basin takes a secret without consent.
A secret given to the basin rises as a pale, wet shadow shaped like the speaker. Until the next dawn, the shade follows the victim through cracks, mirrors, and pools. It cannot attack directly, but it exposes the secret at the worst possible moment and imposes a fictional complication whenever the character tries to conceal it.
The basin cannot be surprised, flanked, or meaningfully distracted. Its magic operates through reflections, including polished armor, still pools, mirrors, and a creature's own eyes.
The living confession cannot be killed by ordinary means. It fades when the victim openly admits the secret to someone they trust, fulfills the vow made to the basin, or the basin is disabled.
If the silver key is removed without satisfying the basin, the chamber's nearest exit seals for a day and the key whispers one secret from every creature present whenever it is used.
