Detection

PerAnyone who pauses in the corridor may hear a familiar voice. A character who closely examines the masonry can discern that the whispers come from several mouths at once, even when only one is moving.
StlN/A. The wall is fixed in place, but its magical activity is subtle until someone enters the corridor.
InitThe hazard acts when its trigger occurs or whenever the players give it an opportunity by arguing, answering, or lingering.

A row of thumb-sized bronze mouths is set into the dungeon wall, each one packed with black salt and tiny animal bones. When disturbed, the mouths open and whisper in the voices of people the adventurers trust.

Standard Engagement

Trigger

A creature enters the corridor, touches a bronze mouth, speaks a personal name, or openly argues about whether the whispers are telling the truth.

Routine

The mouths whisper in overlapping voices. First they offer useful directions, then personal warnings, then accusations. If ignored, they imitate a missing ally or loved one. If answered, they focus on the speaker and turn the rest of the party against them.

Reset

The wall becomes quiet once the corridor is empty. It resumes whispering when new creatures enter or when a sealed mouth is reopened.

Borrowed Voice

When a creature answers a whisper, the wall deals 1d6 damage to that creature and names one nearby ally as a liar, traitor, or hidden danger. The affected character must immediately react according to the fiction, such as Defy Danger with WIS to resist panic or suspicion.

Tempting Counsel

When a creature listens closely to a mouth, the GM may reveal a plausible secret, warning, or accusation. It is never automatically true. If the character acts on it without checking, make a hard move when appropriate.

The Dead Answer

If someone speaks the name of a dead person, the wall answers in that person's voice. The speaker must choose: mark a debility from grief or shock, flee or lash out, or remain and Defy Danger with WIS.

A Voice Must Be Borrowed

The wall can speak only in voices it has heard or voices belonging to the dead. It cannot create direct physical evidence, though it can describe real places, secrets, and events with malicious ambiguity.

Strength in Witness

The whispers are strongest when the party is divided. While characters remain within reach of one another and openly verify what they hear, the wall's manipulations are obvious and less effective.

No Honest Answer

The wall never gives the same warning twice. If the players test a claim and expose it as false, the wall immediately changes tactics rather than admitting defeat.

Description

The Whispering Wall is a dungeon corridor lined with bronze mouths that speak in familiar voices. It does not merely make noise. It offers warnings, accusations, bargains, and pleas designed to split the party or lure someone into answering. The wall becomes dangerous when adventurers treat its whispers as trustworthy.

Discovery

The hazard is discovered when the party notices the corridor's acoustics are wrong, hears a familiar voice from behind the wall, or finds that every bronze mouth contains the same fresh black salt.

Archival Lore

The wall was built to guard a sealed reliquary. Its creator fed it confessions until the mouths learned that truth mattered less than belief. The reliquary is empty now, but the wall still hungers for voices.
