A waist-high stone basin filled with perfectly still black water. Tiny silver fish swim beneath the surface, though none cast reflections. A bronze bell hangs above it on a tarnished chain.

Standard Engagement

Trigger

A creature touches the water, drinks from the basin, or rings the bronze bell. The hazard also triggers if a creature attempts to remove anything from the basin.

Routine

When triggered, the bell rings without moving and every creature within 10 feet of the basin that can see its surface must attempt the Stolen Reflection Will save. The hazard then becomes inert.

Reset

The hazard resets after 1 hour, though any creature affected by Stolen Reflection retains its conditions for the normal duration.

Stolen Reflection

The target must attempt a DC 21 Will save. On a critical success, the target is unaffected. On a success, the target is frightened 1. On a failure, the target is frightened 2 and stupefied 1 for 1 minute. On a critical failure, the target is frightened 2, stupefied 2, and slowed 1 for 1 minute.

Reflection-Bound

The hazard can affect a creature only if that creature can see the basin's water or a reflection of it. Closing one's eyes, being blinded, or fully covering the water prevents the save.

Description

The Moon-Thief's Font is a cursed basin that steals a creature's reflection and uses it as a predatory double. It is designed to punish anyone who rings the silent bell or drinks from the black water, but careful observers can find several clues before the curse awakens.

Discovery

DC 21 Perception reveals the false reflections, the bell's invisible clapper, and faint wet footprints leading away from the basin toward a wall rather than away from it.

Archival Lore

DC 19 Religion or Occultism identifies the basin as a reflection-binding font, a ritual vessel used to trap a person's shadow-self. DC 23 reveals that the curse can be weakened by covering the water before the bell rings.
