Shatterstep Ravine - AI-generated fantasy Hazard

Shatterstep Ravine

The Shatterstep Ravine is a short but treacherous passage where the mountain seems to shed its skin. The danger is not a single hidden mechanism. It is the interaction of loose stone, narrow footing, and sound. A careless step can send pebbles skittering into a fracture, followed by a deep grinding groan as an entire shelf gives way.

Detection

PerPassive Wisdom (Perception) 16 notices loose pebbles, fresh cracks, and unstable shelves. A creature actively searching can identify a specific trigger point with a DC 16 Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Investigation) check.
StlNot hidden. The unstable shelves are obvious from a distance, but the exact trigger points are difficult to distinguish among the natural cracks.
InitThe hazard triggers immediately when its trigger condition occurs. If the party notices the collapse before it begins, it acts on initiative count 20, losing initiative ties.

A narrow ravine winds between sheer walls of fractured gray stone. Loose shale carpets the floor, while huge boulders rest in precarious shelves above the path. Wind whistles through cracks in the rock, carrying the dry rattle of falling pebbles.

Standard Engagement

Trigger

The hazard triggers when a creature crosses an unstable section at full speed, deals thunder damage or an explosive impact within the ravine, fails a check to climb the cliff, or disturbs a marked fault line. The DM can also trigger it when the party makes excessive noise beneath the shelf.

Routine

The hazard remains dormant until triggered. When triggered, one unstable shelf collapses, filling a 30-foot-long, 20-foot-wide section of the ravine. The collapse then produces secondary debris for 1 minute. Once the debris settles, the affected section becomes difficult terrain and may require excavation or climbing to cross.

Reset

The ravine is naturally reset after 1d10 days as loose stone settles. Individual trigger points may remain unstable and can collapse again if disturbed before then.

Cascading Rock Fall

When the hazard triggers, creatures in the affected area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 22 (4d10) bludgeoning damage, is knocked prone, and is buried under rubble. On a successful save, it takes half damage and is not knocked prone. A buried creature is restrained and blinded, has total cover from creatures outside the rubble, and can use its action to make a DC 16 Strength (Athletics) check, freeing itself on a success. Other creatures can free it by dealing 20 damage to the rubble, which has AC 15 and immunity to psychic and poison damage.

Aftershock Debris

After the initial collapse, the ravine remains unstable for 1 minute. At the end of each creature's turn while it is in the affected area, it must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 5 (1d10) bludgeoning damage from secondary debris. A creature that moves at half speed through the area has advantage on this saving throw.

Warning Rumble

The trigger point is a 30-foot-long section of ravine beneath an unstable shelf. Creatures in the section when the collapse begins are affected. Creatures within 10 feet of either end can use their reaction to move up to 10 feet if they can see a safe space and succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check.

Noise and Impact

Thunder damage, explosions, siege weapons, a creature falling against the cliff, or a failed check to climb the ravine can trigger the hazard. The DM may also trigger it when three or more creatures move at full speed through the same unstable section.

Clinging Escape

A creature that succeeds on the initial saving throw can choose to cling to the ravine wall instead of remaining on the ground. Until the end of its next turn, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength (Athletics) check or fall prone as the debris shifts beneath it.

Description

The Shatterstep Ravine is a short but treacherous passage where the mountain seems to shed its skin. The danger is not a single hidden mechanism. It is the interaction of loose stone, narrow footing, and sound. A careless step can send pebbles skittering into a fracture, followed by a deep grinding groan as an entire shelf gives way.

Discovery

The danger is apparent with close observation, but the safest route and the most unstable shelves require a successful DC 16 Wisdom (Survival) or Intelligence (Investigation) check. Characters who examine the ravine from a distance have advantage on this check if they remain still and quiet for at least 1 minute.

Archival Lore

Local guides say the ravine remembers every footstep. In truth, years of freeze-thaw cycles have split the stone into overlapping shelves, while underground water has hollowed out several supports. Old trail markers warn experienced travelers to cross in silence and never stand beneath a black-veined ledge.
