A waist-high stone basin filled with perfectly still water. Pale coins glimmer beneath the surface, though their arrangement subtly changes whenever no one is looking directly at them.

Standard Engagement

Trigger

A creature touches the water, removes or disturbs one of the coins, or deliberately looks into the basin for more than a moment.

Routine

The basin has no routine while inactive. When triggered, it uses Drowning Reflection once, then becomes inactive for 1 minute. It can trigger again if a creature disturbs the coins or removes a cover before it is disabled.

Reset

The basin resets after 10 minutes if it has not been disabled. Its coins return to their original positions, and any cover placed over it slowly slides aside unless secured.

Drowning Reflection

The triggering creature and each creature within 10 feet that can see the basin must attempt a DC 21 Will save. On a critical success, the creature is unaffected. On a success, it is dazzled until the end of its next turn. On a failure, it is dazzled for 1 minute and frightened 1. On a critical failure, it is dazzled for 1 minute, frightened 2, and believes it is sinking, becoming immobilized until the end of its next turn.

Breaking the Vision

A creature affected by Drowning Reflection can attempt a DC 21 Will save at the end of each of its turns, ending the immobilized condition on a success and reducing its frightened value by 1 on a critical success.

Predatory Reflection

A creature that intentionally avoids looking at the water gains a +2 circumstance bonus to its Will save against Drowning Reflection. A creature that closes its eyes or is otherwise unable to see the basin is immune to the visual component of the effect.

Indirect Sight

The basin's magical effect is visual. Mirrors, polished shields, and similar surfaces can reveal the basin's reflection, but viewing it indirectly does not prevent the hazard from triggering unless the creature succeeds at a DC 21 Perception check to recognize the reflection as dangerous.

Description

The basin is a hungry scrying vessel that remembers every face reflected in its waters. It lures explorers with false treasure, then floods their senses with visions of drowning. The hazard is most dangerous when the party argues over whether the coins are real.

Discovery

DC 21 Perception reveals that the coins shift position when unwatched and that the reflected faces in the water move a heartbeat late. A creature that studies the basin for 1 minute and succeeds at DC 19 Occultism or Religion recognizes it as a magical scrying hazard.

Archival Lore

The basin was made to let the river cult observe distant waterways through reflected faces. After its creator drowned, the vessel began treating every reflected creature as a trespasser already submerged beneath the river.
