The Kindly Mispath - AI-generated fantasy Hazard

The Kindly Mispath

The Kindly Mispath is a living section of Feywild woodland that rearranges distance, memory, and intention. It never appears openly hostile. Instead, it offers shortcuts, familiar voices, flattering reflections, and glimpses of destinations just beyond the trees. Every apparent kindness leads travelers away from their intended route and toward a flowering hollow where the grove feeds on their certainty.

Detection

PerPassive Perception 20, or DC 20 Wisdom (Perception) to notice the grove's delayed echoes, false shadows, and flowers that turn toward creatures even when there is no wind.
StlDC 18 Wisdom (Perception) to notice the grove's supernatural behavior before entering. The hazard is not hidden, but its danger is disguised as hospitality.
InitThe hazard activates on initiative count 20. If no initiative has been rolled, it activates when a creature enters the grove.

A ring of silver-barked trees surrounds a patch of impossibly bright flowers. Their petals display the faces of people the characters trust, each one smiling and silently mouthing a different invitation. The air smells of rain, sugared fruit, and freshly turned earth.

Standard Engagement

Trigger

The hazard triggers when a creature enters the ring of silver-barked trees, speaks its destination aloud, or accepts an invitation from one of the flowers.

Routine

On initiative count 20, the grove chooses up to three creatures it can sense within 120 feet. Each chosen creature hears a trusted voice offering a route, warning, or personal promise. A chosen creature must succeed on the hazard's saving throw or be affected by Borrowed Direction. The grove never repeats the same voice or offer twice in one day.

Reset

The hazard resets at sunset. A creature that has successfully placated it can pass through safely for 10 minutes, after which the grove begins testing that creature again.

Borrowed Direction

When a creature first enters the grove or starts its turn within it, it must make a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 22 (4d10) psychic damage and becomes Bewildered until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, it takes half damage and is not Bewildered.

Bewildered

A Bewildered creature perceives one harmless-looking route, creature, or object as the safest way forward. Until the condition ends, the creature cannot willingly move closer to the grove's center unless it succeeds on a DC 19 Intelligence saving throw. It can still move, attack, and take other actions normally.

Stolen Certainty

If a creature fails the saving throw by 5 or more, the grove steals a small certainty from its mind. Until the creature finishes a short or long rest, it has disadvantage on its next saving throw against being charmed or frightened, and the grove can imitate that creature's voice.

Familiar Voices

The grove can imitate any voice it has heard, including the voice of a dead or absent person. Its imitations are emotionally accurate but contain one small factual error. A character who spends an action testing the statement and succeeds on a DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) check recognizes the error.

Unreliable Distance

The grove's interior distance is unstable. A creature that fails two or more saving throws against the hazard before leaving is displaced 1d6 miles from its intended destination when it exits, arriving at a thematically appropriate but inconvenient location chosen by the DM.

The Price of Intent

A creature that openly states its intended destination, true name, or deepest desire while inside the grove has disadvantage on its next saving throw against the hazard. A creature that travels in silence for an entire round has advantage on its next saving throw.

Anchor of the Mispath

The central tree is the grove's anchor. It has AC 17, 90 hit points, immunity to psychic and poison damage, and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. If reduced to 0 hit points, it collapses into silver leaves and the hazard is suppressed until the next sunset. A character proficient with herbalism kits, Nature, or Survival can restore the tree with 50 gp of rare Feywild soil and 1 hour of work.

Description

The Kindly Mispath is a living section of Feywild woodland that rearranges distance, memory, and intention. It never appears openly hostile. Instead, it offers shortcuts, familiar voices, flattering reflections, and glimpses of destinations just beyond the trees. Every apparent kindness leads travelers away from their intended route and toward a flowering hollow where the grove feeds on their certainty.

Discovery

A character who studies the grove for 1 minute and succeeds on a DC 20 Wisdom (Survival), Intelligence (Nature), or Wisdom (Perception) check realizes that the apparent trail markings point in contradictory directions. On a success by 5 or more, the character also identifies the oldest tree as the anchor of the misdirection.

Archival Lore

Fey scholars say the Kindly Mispath was born when a lost queen asked the forest for directions and promised to surrender the name of her destination. The forest accepted the promise literally. Since then, the grove has helped countless travelers by ensuring they never reach the place they meant to find. Some believe it is malicious. Others claim it is simply incapable of understanding that a journey can have an honest destination.
