The Watchdog Alley
The Watchdog Alley is a haunted alarm system disguised as a common service lane. It senses movement beneath its awning, rings a piercing bell, and causes the surrounding buildings to answer with slamming shutters, thrown objects, and hostile residents. The hazard is dangerous because it turns a quiet crossing into a public accusation. It does not merely injure intruders. It isolates them, marks them as criminals, and draws attention from anyone nearby.

Detection
“A narrow lane paved with uneven black stones, its upper windows strung with laundry and its gutters crowded with rainwater. Above the alley hangs a faded red awning bearing the painted image of a smiling dog. The dog’s eyes are small brass lenses, and the sign creaks even when there is no wind.”
Standard Engagement
A creature, cart, or unattended object crosses beneath the faded red awning or casts a clear shadow across the painted dog sign. The trigger is delayed for a heartbeat, giving observant characters a final chance to react if they noticed the clues.
On the first exchange, the sign rings and the characters must Defy Danger to avoid being startled or exposed. On the next exchange, the alley throws debris at one exposed character, dealing d6 damage and forcing them into an awkward position. On the following exchange, shutters and doors slam to divide the group while residents begin shouting. Each later exchange, choose one exposed character for thrown debris, separate a character from allies, summon guards, or reveal a dangerous fact about someone in the party. The routine stops when the hazard is disabled, the characters leave the alley, or the spirit is appeased.
The alarm falls silent after one minute without movement beneath the awning. The shutters reset, debris settles back into place, and the brass eyes become still. The hazard resets fully after an hour unless the sign, bell wire, or gutter chain has been damaged.
When the hazard is triggered, the dog sign emits a shrill ringing that can be heard several streets away. Every character beneath the awning’s shadow must Defy Danger or freeze, flinch, or drop what they are holding, as appropriate to the fiction.
The alley attacks with mundane objects: flowerpots, broom handles, loose bricks, buckets, and shutters. A target who cannot find cover takes d6 damage and is knocked into a wall, cart, or muddy gutter. A target who takes cover may avoid the damage but becomes pinned or separated from the group.
After the first round, nearby residents respond to the alarm. Doors slam, windows open, and frightened or angry people shout accusations. The GM makes a hard move if the characters linger, such as attracting guards, separating an ally, starting a panic, or revealing a wanted face.
The hazard covers the length of the red awning and the section of alley directly beneath it. It cannot pursue characters beyond the lane, though its alarm and summoned attention can spread.
The Watchdog recognizes a specific guild whistle, a painted brass token, or a convincing claim of official business. Presenting one pauses the routine, but a visibly false credential causes the hazard to immediately advance one step.
The hazard becomes less dangerous when the crowd is treated as part of the problem. A character who calms residents, protects a bystander, or exposes the guild’s wrongdoing may create an opportunity to disable the sign without another attack.
If the sign is destroyed without addressing the bound spirit, the spirit escapes into the nearest bell, clock, or metal sign. The GM may relocate a weaker version of the hazard to another nearby street.
