The Bell That Remembers
The Bell That Remembers is a silent alarm disguised as an old floor bell. It does not care about footsteps, weight, or stolen treasure. It listens for a spoken name, title, or command inside its circle. When triggered, it tolls twice without moving, and the sound calls forth a spectral sentinel from the nearest wall. The sentinel does not immediately attack. It first demands that the named intruder answer for their presence, giving the characters a chance to bargain, lie, or retreat.

Detection
“A circle of black salt surrounds a fist-sized brass bell set into the floor. The bell has no clapper, yet its tongue trembles whenever someone speaks nearby. Thin violet light leaks from the cracks between the floorstones.”
Standard Engagement
A creature speaks a true name, title, or direct command while standing within the black salt circle.
On a trigger, the bell tolls once immediately and again at the end of the next exchange. After the second toll, summon the spectral sentinel and reveal an escalating consequence such as alerted guards, awakened undead, or a closing passage. The sentinel questions the marked characters before attacking unless they refuse, lie poorly, or attempt to flee.
After the sentinel is defeated or dismissed, the bell falls silent and the salt slowly reforms over several hours. If the binding phrase was not destroyed, the hazard resets at the next midnight.
When triggered, every creature that spoke within the ward during the last minute is marked by a violet line around the throat. Until the mark is removed or the sentinel is defeated, the marked creature cannot speak above a whisper without attracting the sentinel's attention.
The summoned guardian appears from a wall within moments. It has 12 HP, 2 armor, and attacks with a freezing grasp for d8 damage. It cannot be harmed by mundane weapons until the bell is silenced or the salt circle is broken.
The first toll makes every flame in the dungeon burn blue. The second toll alerts nearby dungeon inhabitants and gives the GM a chance to introduce a patrol, monster, or interested spirit.
The bell triggers when a creature speaks its own name, another creature's true name, or a clear command within the salt circle. Ordinary conversation does not trigger it unless the GM judges that a dangerous name or command was spoken.
The sentinel can be negotiated with. It answers one question truthfully if the characters offer a name, memory, or secret of comparable value. The GM should make the cost meaningful, not merely inconvenient.
The bell cannot distinguish truth from a convincing declaration. Clever characters may feed it a false name, but the GM should make the deception matter if the bell later learns the truth.
